and i’d do it again

people ask what it takes to put a project out independently. here’s the real answer.

every friday night for two years. money i didn’t have going to beats, mixing, mastering, distribution, ads. no label, no advance, just me and a job.

friendships that couldn’t handle me being busy. 17 songs nobody will ever hear, which are the whole reason the six that made it are any good.

and the part of me that needed permission. that one took the longest to lose.

nothing i’d take back.

took me 22 releases to learn most of this and nobody sat me down and explained any of it.

the biggest one: if you drop singles first and then roll them into a project, reuse the same isrc codes on the album versions. same code means every stream and all the algorithmic history carries over. let your distributor generate new ones and you’re starting from zero on songs that already had traction. only exception is if it’s a different mix or master, then you need a new one.

send people to the album version, not the standalone single. spotify autoplays into the next track from there, so one click turns into two or three plays. takes two minutes in your distributor’s link settings

pitch spotify four weeks out, not four days. you get one editorial pitch per release and it has to be in before the song goes live. miss it and you’ve given up the only free shot at playlisting anybody hands you.

exclude your own followers from your ads. otherwise you’re paying to reach people you already have. ads buy strangers, posts keep the ones you’ve got.

collect emails on your pre-save page. a pre-save helps you on release day. an email helps you on every release after that. most distributors have a box for it and almost nobody checks it.

and don’t drop on friday if nobody’s waiting. why compete with drake on a friday when you can give people a gift midweek?

I wasted years believing things about music that nobody ever told me were false.

the biggest one: somebody will find me if it’s good enough. nobody’s looking. there’s no scout in the crowd. every artist you know about got found because they made noise first.

i also thought i needed better gear before i could start. made my first song on a phone with the headphones that came in the box. the gear was never what was holding me back.

posting about it felt corny to me for a long time. it is corny. right up until it works, then the same exact move looks like vision. that one cost me the most time.

i kept waiting to feel ready. you don’t. the confidence shows up after you put something out, not before. i had that backwards the entire time.

and i thought one big moment would change everything. there’s no moment. it’s 200 small ones and you only notice a few of them.

last one, the ones who make it aren’t different from you. they just kept going past the part where you’d normally stop.

six years to unlearn all of it. my debut project tony montana is out now and it only exists because i stopped believing this list.
