He came up with the name “Microsoft.” Then cancer forced him to walk away from the company at 30.

Paul Allen died on October 15th, 2018 in Seattle from complications of non-Hodgkin lymphoma. He was 65.

In 1974 he spotted the Altair 8800 computer on the cover of Popular Electronics at a newsstand in Harvard Square and ran to show his childhood friend Bill Gates. A few months later they started Microsoft.

He was diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma in 1982 and left Microsoft the next year. He beat it, and spent the rest of his life spending his fortune on whatever fascinated him.

He bought the Seattle Seahawks in 1997 and kept them from moving to Los Angeles. They won the Super Bowl in 2014. He funded SpaceShipOne, the first privately built spacecraft to carry a person into space. His research teams found the wreck of the USS Indianapolis, more than 18,000 feet below the Pacific. A lifelong Jimi Hendrix fan, he also built the Museum of Pop Culture in Seattle.

He gave away more than $2 billion, a large part of it to brain science, and pledged to leave most of his fortune to charity. by @rememerylegacy

The man who played James Bond in seven films was afraid of guns. He flinched every time one went off on set.

He was the son of a London policeman. As a teenager he got a job at an animation studio and was fired from it. He went on to model knitwear before acting work came in.

He became a star on TV as Simon Templar in “The Saint,” and in 1973 he took over as James Bond in “Live and Let Die.” He played 007 for 12 years, in more official Bond films than any other actor. He was 57 when he made his last one, “A View to a Kill.”

His good friend Audrey Hepburn got him involved with UNICEF, and he became a Goodwill Ambassador in 1991. He spent the rest of his life raising money for children around the world, and Queen Elizabeth knighted him in 2003 for that work.

He died of cancer in Switzerland on May 23rd, 2017. He was 89. by @rememerylegacy

Margaret Thatcher was born on October 13th, 1925 in Grantham, England. She would have turned 101 today.

She was born Margaret Roberts and grew up in the flat above her family’s shop. She studied chemistry at Oxford, worked as a research chemist, and then retrained as a barrister specializing in tax law.

In 1979 she became the first woman to serve as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. She held the job for 11 years, longer than any other British Prime Minister of the 20th century.

A Soviet army newspaper nicknamed her “the Iron Lady” in 1976 as an insult. She took the name and used it for the rest of her career.

In 1984 the IRA bombed her hotel in Brighton during her party’s conference, killing five people. She was at her conference speech the next morning, on schedule.

She was one of the most admired and one of the most opposed leaders of her time, and people still argue about her legacy today. She died of a stroke on April 8th, 2013. She was 87.

Remembering Mike Ditka: The Fridge scores. Da Coach rides.

In Super Bowl XX, Mike Ditka put William “The Refrigerator” Perry in at fullback — and the biggest Bear on the roster plunged into the end zone. Minutes later the scoreboard read Bears 46, Patriots 10, and Chicago carried Iron Mike off the Superdome turf on their shoulders.

Day 1 was the prophecy. This is the payoff.

What Super Bowl XX moment still hits you hardest?

RJ Mitte, the actor who gave Walter “Flynn” White Jr. so much heart on Breaking Bad, has died at 34.

Born in Jackson, Mississippi, RJ was diagnosed with cerebral palsy at age three. He moved to Hollywood in 2006 hoping to find roles where his disability could help educate viewers, and in 2008 he landed the part of a lifetime: Walter White’s son on Breaking Bad. Across all five seasons, he brought warmth and honesty to a character living with CP, just like him.

Off screen, RJ became a passionate disability-rights advocate, using his platform to push Hollywood toward more inclusion and representation. Last October he announced his engagement to his longtime partner, Kennedy Suarez.

His representatives confirmed he died on Monday, October 12, 2026, in Brownsville, Texas. A cause of death has not been disclosed. Our hearts are with Kennedy, his family, his Breaking Bad family, and everyone he inspired.

Swipe through to remember RJ ➡️

John Denver died on October 12th, 1997 when the small experimental plane he was flying ran out of fuel and crashed into Monterey Bay off Pacific Grove, California. He was 53.

His real name was Henry John Deutschendorf Jr. He took the name “Denver” from the city because he loved the Rocky Mountains.

He wrote “Leaving on a Jet Plane,” and Peter, Paul and Mary took it to number one in 1969. He wrote “Annie’s Song” for his wife in about 10 minutes on a ski lift in Aspen.

“Take Me Home, Country Roads” was started by two friends while they were driving in Maryland. Denver helped them finish it in one night in 1970. West Virginia later made it an official state song, and Colorado did the same for “Rocky Mountain High.”

He also spent much of his life fighting world hunger and protecting the environment, and he co-founded the Windstar Foundation in Colorado.

Almost thirty years later, stadiums full of people still sing “Country Roads” word for word. by @rememerylegacy

Eleanor Roosevelt was born on October 11th, 1884 in New York City. She would have turned 142 today.

She lost her mother at 8 and her father at 10. Her uncle, President Theodore Roosevelt, walked her down the aisle when she married her distant cousin Franklin in 1905.

She was First Lady for 12 years, longer than anyone in American history, and she refused to stay quiet in the role. She held press conferences for women reporters only, which pushed newspapers to hire women just to get the story. She wrote a daily newspaper column called “My Day” for almost 27 years.

In 1939 the Daughters of the American Revolution blocked the singer Marian Anderson from performing at Constitution Hall because she was Black. Eleanor resigned from the group in public and helped move the concert to the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, where 75,000 people came to hear her sing.

President Truman later called her “the First Lady of the World.”

Iron Mike has left us. 🕊️🏈

Mike Ditka was born Michael Keller Ditka in Carnegie, Pennsylvania, on October 18, 1939. As a Chicago Bears tight end he redefined the position and earned a place in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. As head coach he led the 1985 Bears to Super Bowl XX — and he remains one of only two people ever to win a Super Bowl as a player, an assistant coach, and a head coach (alongside Tom Flores). Fierce, blunt, and unforgettable, “Da Coach” became part of how Chicago talks about football.

Mike Ditka died on October 9, 2026. He was 86.

Swipe through to remember a life that helped define Chicago football. 🐻➡️

Edith Piaf died of liver cancer on October 10th, 1963 on the French Riviera. She was 47.

Her body was quietly driven to Paris overnight so the city she loved could announce her death there.

Her friend, the poet and filmmaker Jean Cocteau, heard the news that morning. He died of a heart attack a few hours later.

She was only 4 foot 8. When a nightclub owner discovered her in 1935, he named her “La Môme Piaf,” Parisian slang for “the little sparrow.” The name stuck for the rest of her life.

She wrote the lyrics to “La Vie en Rose” herself. “Non, je ne regrette rien” became her anthem. Both songs are still used in films around the world today.

The Catholic Church refused to give her a funeral mass. Tens of thousands of people lined the streets of Paris anyway, and traffic stopped for the first time since the end of World War II.
