Holiday season is fast approaching and I can't wait to dig in to all of the delicious pot luck spreads each occasion brings here in Hawaii! I had so much fun drawing some of my favorite ~ono kine grindz~ in this imagined spread for a local style New Year's Eve celebration. What makes Hawaii so unique, aside from our melting pot of food and people from all different cultures, is our sense of family and community! And of course--what's a local NYE celebration without FIREWORKS!?

A sneak peak of my upcoming book “At The Water’s Edge” written by the amazing @kamalanihurley for @lernerbooks @instachinz + AD Emily Harris 🩵

I’m so honored to be part of a project celebrating the remarkable life of Dr. Isabella Aiona Abbott. A trailblazing marine botanist and the first Native Hawaiian woman to earn a Ph.D. in science, she dedicated her career to studying marine algae, or limu. Her work transformed her field, bridging traditional indigenous knowledge with modern science. What a privilege to illustrate the story of an extraordinary woman whose legacy continues to inspire people across Hawaiʻi and beyond!

The first piece of my “Rice Watah” series 🌾

Growing up, I watched my grandmother save rice water to fertilize her orchids. I always loved this little ritual of making use of something that would otherwise be poured away. This illustration is in honor of her 90th birthday today! Here’s to all the flowers, family, and friends she has nurtured throughout her life. 💛 taken in Pearl City, Hawaii by @remijoose

Some of my favorite spreads of Izzy from At the Water’s Edge by @kamalanihurley, published by @lernerbooks 🌊

Her love for limu began in her hana butta days, sitting at her mother’s side, watching the other women sort seaweed by color, shape, texture, and purpose. Her extraordinary contributions to marine botany earned her the affectionate nickname, the “First Lady of Limu.”

✨🌳♻️ Cover Reveal! ♻️🌳✨

We’re feeling super inspired by this lush new cover for TRADING TRASH FOR TREES: How a Plastic Cup Helped Restore the Kenyan Mangroves, illustrated by our very own Remi Jose, written by Jacqueline Johnson! Arriving on bookshelves everywhere April 20th, 2027 from @holidayhousepeachtree!

@remijoose @jjohnsonbooks

As a community gathers on the shores of Mombasa to clean up the trash that litters their beach, an empty yogurt cup sparks an idea: could this piece of plastic be the key to restoring Kenya’s once-mighty mangrove forest?

On the shores of Kenya, the mighty mangrove trees once had their own song-the lapping of the tides against their roots, the trilling of insects, and the harmonies of birds. But as the cities expanded, the forests shrank. The birds and fish disappeared, trash began to litter the barren land, and soon, all that remained was silence.

But one day, a small group of people begins to clean. As they dream of what the forest once was, they start collecting tins, dirty napkins, and food cartons. When a yogurt cup is found, an idea is sparked: can this empty piece of plastic trash help bring the forest back? That cup becomes home to a tiny mangrove seedling. Soon, a dozen seedlings become one hundred, and then more than two hundred thousand. Slowly, the forest begins to return. As the seedlings take root, the birds and fish find their way back, and the song of the mangroves begins anew.

Trading Trash for Trees shares the inspiring story of Big Ship, a community-based organization in Mombasa working to restore Kenya’s degraded mangrove ecosystems. Through lyrical, stirring text and colorful, kid-friendly art, this book shows budding young environmentalists that by putting on their thinking caps and working together, they can find ways to make a real difference. by @remijoose
