Life lately,

No one ever talks about the calm after a storm. The eerily quiet lulls in life that were once filled with so much happiness and laughter. Life looks different now, there’s a regaining of confidence I’m learning and an uneasiness of putting myself back into the world. Sometimes it feels selfish to be happy, knowing I’m missing someone I love so much, and feeling like these new memories I’m creating should’ve been spent with him. Attempting to make sense of a loss this great leaves me expressionless and staring at a wall in silence, grief is weird that way. It comes and goes in waves, some so small you can barely notice and others like tidal waves threatening to knock me over in one quick motion.
I’ve talked to God a lot more recently, there’s a comfort in knowing that no matter how alone I may be feeling, God is always right there listening and holding me up when I need.
I’ve learned a lot through this journey, and here is some of it:
The loneliness doesn’t need to be experienced in solitude.
Grief isn’t linear and there’s no timeline on your emotions.
There is safety in letting your loved ones in to love you.
Lastly, life is beautiful and short, sometimes shorter than we realize, and it’s way too short to not spend it doing what you love with the people you love and who love you.

John 16:33: “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world”.

Gunner,
My heart doesn’t understand this loss and I am just waiting for it to be a bad dream.
I find myself consumed in our memories. Cooking together in our home, playing battleship (and you thinking I was cheating because you hated to lose), pushing the couch together to make a big bed for movie nights, sitting out on our patio to watch the stars, our morning coffees watching the sunrise, eating way too many pedialyte pops. It’s hard to think we’ll never have that again, and it hurts to hold on to that thought.
I’m waiting for you to bounce into our home with all your energy and your big mischievous grin and you’d say something like “I’m coming for those lips” and give me a huge kiss.
What I would do for another hug from you, one more movie night, one more cooking in the kitchen and setting the table while you rate my meals and add them to your list of favorites.
I miss you baby, so much more than you know. I miss your touch, I miss your laugh, I miss your scent. You took a part of me with you, and I don’t know how I’ll ever be whole again.
I will forever love you and cherish our time together, our chapter was amazing and I’m not ready to say goodbye, and deep down I know it’s just a see you later.
Words can never express what my heart refuses to accept. My heart is broken, it’s hard to catch my breath, and I just wish I could pull you in right now. Even though you’re gone here, I know you’re with Jesus, your dad, and your uncle up there watching down on me and your family. I hope there’s tvs up there so you can continue to scream at the eagles games all season, and come every Sunday I’ll be screaming GO BIRDS like you’d want me to.
