If you ever wondered about why #podcast editing can take so long, this is the video for you. While I’ve used an AI editor to put this together, I’d never use one to take them out (as it stands) - they lack finesse, subjectivity, and the experience to ensure a natural rhythm is maintained in the dialogue. Every edit we make is manual, and careful, even when we’re working on a same-morning turnaround.

Some people just have a tendency to umm and err, especially when you ask them very specific questions about points in a 30-40 year career.

As podcast editors, it’s up to us to do what we can to keep the energy up for the listener, to make sure it keeps their attention, and especially in b2b we have to make sure our contributors sound confident in what they’re saying.

It’s finessed, and time consuming, but we love doing it.

This week’s guest is KnowleDJ — a Canadian, open-format DJ now based in Las Vegas who’s opened for the Backstreet Boys, Ice Cube and Ariana Grande, and runs the after-parties for No Doubt’s Sphere shows.

Knowledj has recently written a book about his career, and the economics of DJing and more, and it’s an interesting take on DJing, in that it’s about how to have a career as a DJ rather than how to be the DJ that gets the attention. It comes from a slightly different angle to other guests as so much of his work is in artist touring and Vegas.

Have a listen and if you get some good insights out of the show, be sure to hit up @knowledjofficial to get his book The DJ Diaries, on pre order July 5th!

I’ve been thinking for a while about reposting some old eps, and on the back of publishing the new @cutchemist episode, I thought it’d be cool to republish this one with @djnumark - now available as video.

It was really nice to revisit this, loads of interesting stuff in there covering Nu’s heritage, DJing, production and more. Love that he discussed the Sapo record which Cut also described, used for Lesson 6!

(the red bit is supposed to be a not to an Obi Strip which says reissue so apologies if it’s totally wrong).

Enjoy! by @remote_ctrl_

This one’s been near the top of my wishlist since day one.

Cut Chemist — half of the Jurassic 5 production team, the other half of Brain Freeze with DJ Shadow, the man behind The Audience’s Listening — sat down with me for Episode 85, and we went deep.

From kicking along to a Bobby Darin concert before he was even born, to the Rhino Records quarter bins where he and his friends quietly built crates of beats nobody had touched, to the Jungle Brothers album that made him realise he could make “a record made out of records.”

We get into the J5 years, sharing the production chair with Nu-Mark, the all-45s leap into Brain Freeze, the solo tightrope of going it alone, and the candlelit listening parties he’s pouring everything into now.

It’s long, it’s gloriously nerdy, and honestly I couldn’t have asked for more from someone who’s shaped my own DJing this much.

Quick turnaround event video for @taxcalc at Accountex. All filmed to ensure we could get something out ASAP to ensure the team had something to capitalise on the LinkedIn buzz.

Here’s what their head of marketing had to say:

“Super quick turnaround time, the same evening of the event. I believe we were the very first to post a recap video of any kind - spectacular performance and incredible quality.

Thanks Adam and Jimmy, cracking work.“ by @remote_ctrl_

This week I sat down with Carl Loben, Editor-in-Chief of DJ Mag. He’s been chronicling dance music since the early 90s — from blagging gig reviews for Melody Maker, to running one of the most influential titles in the game for the last decade.

We got into the lot. His acid house epiphany at Glastonbury. Beat-matching with no lessons in Hackney freestyle rooms. Painting himself into a corner as the drum & bass guy. The cult of the superstar DJ. Founding Westway Records with Barry Ashworth from the Dub Pistols, and Jack Said What with Irvine Welsh and the other Steve Mac. Co-authoring Renegade Snares with Ben Murphy and the whitewashing he set out to address.

A proper one for anyone who cares about the people who’ve quietly shaped the culture from behind the printed page.
