Today is Thanksgiving. It also marks the two year and two months anniversary of me starting (cyr-iously) learning cyr wheel! I have endless gratitude for the role cyr wheel plays in my life and wanted to share my experience today as we give thanks 🫶

Cyr wheel is really, really hard. Like most circus disciplines, it requires balance, coordination, and strength, but its learning curve is freaking BRUTAL and there are no shortcuts. It’s only possible to get better by putting in the time on the wheel and trying and failing over and over again. Even after you acquire a new skill, you still have to repeat the process to become consistent, and that doesn’t even include learning to sequence with other moves! (@scarredmewtwo has a great video about this on his page if you’re curious)

My cyr wheel journey has become the most profound exercise in self love in my entire life. It’s been doing the heavyyyyy lifting in supporting my mental health over the past two years, (and yes, the literal wheel itself is pretty heavy, ~40 to 50 lbs). It’s kind of ironic– I first started grinding cyr wheel out of pure spite to prove my haters wrong, and while spite is one HELL of a drug, I’ve sustained my passion in the long term through the incredible sense of dedication, trust, and accomplishment it gives me. In a ⭕️about way, it’s allowed me to heal many deep wounds regarding my involvement in sports, relationship with my gender and body, and my difficulties with motor delays that make learning physical things much much harder for me. So excited for what the future holds ❤️‍🔥

Overdue life update! I graduated from Oberlin with triple majors in East Asian Studies, Environmental Studies, and Geosciences almost a year ago. I had a pretty unusual academic trajectory and somehow managed to complete 3 programs in 5 years while finishing both the Japanese and Chinese language tracks in East Asian Studies (thanks Covid and Princeton in Beijing)! 🎓

I’ve been living in Oberlin for the past year working as an AmeriCorps VISTA for a local food justice non-profit called City Fresh, and my year-long term of service ends in late June. I’m headed back to South Florida for the latter half of the summer and then I plan on hopefully coming back up to Northeast Ohio in the fall. I’m in the process of job hunting right now and don’t know exactly what field I’ll be working in, but the good thing about having three degrees and a resume with over a dozen different jobs is that I’ve got a lot of varied skills and qualifications in all sorts of sectors.

I’ve loved living in the community as an alum and being a part of some fantastic organizations like BalletO and OCircus! I started an Oberlin Bucket List 6 years ago and there’s been a whole bunch of things I’ve been able to check off of the list as an alum now that I’m not as busy as I was as a student, and I’m looking forward to finishing the rest off in the next two months 🪣 taken in Oberlin College by @ren.waldman

Today I graduated from Princeton in Beijing! This summer has been very difficult, but I learned so much Chinese and worked very hard! I made lots of new friends with my teachers and classmates, and I hope we can meet face-to-face one day~ taken in Princeton in Beijing by @ren.waldman
