A month later, we’re still smiling about this night.

Imagine on the Rooftop was more than a celebration. It was the beginning of a new tradition for Imagine Englewood If … bringing together friends, supporters, neighbors, and partners who believe in what’s possible for Englewood.

As we continue those conversations and gather again with some of the people helping us imagine what comes next, we’re reminded that community is built one relationship at a time.

I couldn’t figure out what to call this category because it’s not nightlife photography to me. Through doing some brainstorming with @callme.camfrank and @toritorsion we can up with “lifestyle parties”. For me, these are events that attract a community of people who love the same type of music. From hip-hop to r&b to juke to reggaeton to house to afrobeats and dancehall. The outfits for these gigs definitely reflect my personality the most. I just break out the flannel for layers, nike high-tops, millennial yoga pants and a black crop top for these lifestyle parties.
.
In this collection of photos you’ll experience the feeling each person had in this exact moment with whatever song that DJ decided to play. Honestly wish I could play that song with each photo actually 🤔💡 but until then! I invite you into these slices of time, something only photography is able to capture. 🔐

Deciding what to wear for each type of gig is a balance of wanting to be myself but also professional. I like to make sure my outfits flow and make sense and do this by paying attention to color. Comfort is a huge priority for me. I personally can’t wear dresses or heals on a job and I know this because I have tried. 😂🫠

These portraits of myself are outfits that I wear to gigs combined with my go-to camera homies. I always wanted to share the various types of outfits I wear depending on the gig, and I figured why not show the images that come along with it.

Happy International Dance Day to the dancers, to anyone who loves to dance, to the people on the dance floor, to the DJs who make us dance, to the venues who host dance. ✨
.
These photos represent the fullest circle moment in my career. when i first saw @thealiyajanell back in 2018 with her Chun-Li video, i saw photos of her captivating movement immediately. i knew i had to get in the same room as her and capture stills of her fast-paced routines, but she was across the country in LA. over the years, i have gotten in the same room as her (shoutout to @thezurisaddai 🎥🎥) and have photographed her but it wasn’t official. with this recent workshop she did in chicago, i reached out to see if she wanted candids and because she recognized my name and remembered the photos i took of her in 2018 and 2022, she said YES. 🤯😭
.
i told her she is the reason i got into dance photography. i have built with the best of the best in chicago - shouting out @redds.angelz @redd.retro_ @tjwilliamsphotography @thediamondmvmt @jaye.reed @indiemedia @anahi_hdo @faitaccomplidance @netty_betty16 and it’s all because she demands attention and that’s why dancers catch mine. photographing empowered women has always been my creative outlet so when i discovered dancersss, it just clicked. 🧩

to all my dancers i’ve worked with, yall keep creating because you can’t help BUT TO dance! it’s in your blood like literally 😂 i get it cause i vibe every time too even if im being low key about it 🙈 anywayy, enjoy this set because this represents my dream that literally came true! 🥹😭🫶 by @renacaptures
