What a fantastic day! This is our next generation of filmmakers! All the students who had their films screened today were under 18 when they finished their films. We loved having them join us and look forward to following their respective creative journeys. taken in Rockingham, Western Australia by @renae_hb

Through Rock The Boat Film Festival’s collaboration with Yellowstone International Film Festival, our Festival Director, @renae_hb, will select three short films from our Official Selection to be screened at Y.I.F.F. in India, giving WA filmmakers a chance at international recognition and opportunities that may otherwise be out of reach. A huge shoutout to @suniils, @tushar_tyagi and @renae_hb for helping make this collaboration possible. We're so exciting for the future!

I’ve always loved old picture theatres and the stories they hold. I’m not exactly sure why I’m so drawn to them, but I think it probably comes from my Nanna, who I was very close to. She played piano for silent movies and was an amazing pianist.

So I thought I’d start visiting some of Australia’s old theatres and learning a bit more about their history along the way.

Before I embark on a search for some of these gorgeous historic cinemas, I wanted to share a photo I took a little while ago while visiting beautiful Tasmania.

This theatre wasn’t open when I walked past, but it stood proudly overlooking the Huon River, and I would have loved to wander inside and have a look around.

The Palais Theatre in Franklin, Huon Valley, was built in 1912 and originally opened as the Franklin Town Hall. The Federation-style building was later remodelled in the Art Deco style and officially reopened in 1939 as “Palais Theatre — the Pride of the Huon.”

The first film was screened there in 1912, kicking off decades of “picture shows.”
