Artists · Now | Josèfa Ntjam, 2026 Marcel Duchamp Prize finalist

@josefantjam, featured artist of the 15th edition of the Rencontres de Bamako, African Biennial of Photography, is among the four nominees for the 2026 Marcel Duchamp Prize.

Her work has been on view at the Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris (MAM) since 2 October, following the opening reception on 1 October.

She presents a film rooted in Cameroonian history, accompanied by a vibrating “choir of sculptures”. The installation explores historical memory, erasure and transmission.

A Franco-Cameroonian artist, Josèfa Ntjam works across photomontage, sculpture, video and sound. Drawing on historical archives, digital resources, mythology and scientific references, she constructs alternative narratives.

The winner of the Marcel Duchamp Prize will be announced on 22 October.

Josèfa Ntjam, artiste à l’honneur de la 15e édition des Rencontres de Bamako, figure parmi les quatre artistes nommé·e·s du Prix Marcel Duchamp 2026.

Depuis le 2 octobre, son travail est présenté au Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris (MAM), après un vernissage organisé le 1er octobre.

Elle y présente un film ancré dans l’histoire du Cameroun, accompagné d’une « chorale de sculptures » vibrantes. Cette installation explore les mémoires historiques, leurs effacements et leurs transmissions.

Josèfa Ntjam développe une pratique associant photomontage, sculpture, vidéo et son. Elle travaille à partir d’archives historiques, de ressources numériques, de mythologies et de références scientifiques pour construire de nouveaux récits.

Le ou la lauréat·e du Prix Marcel Duchamp sera annoncé·e le 22 octobre.

This Saturday, 17 October at 7:30 PM, Malian photographer, rapper and performer King Massassy presents Yiri City, his new culinary performance, near Arles, France.

Currently in residence with Paroles Indigo, he also presented his photographic work at the École nationale supérieure de la photographie (ENSP) in Arles on 14 October.

King Massassy participated in the Rencontres de Bamako in 2015 and 2017.

With the Curatorial Team · Armelle Dakouo in Paris

@armelledk General Curator of the 15th edition of the Rencontres de Bamako, African Biennial of Photography, presents a new curatorial project in Paris.

Alongside historian Ângela Benoliel Coutinho, she co-curates the exhibition “Amílcar Cabral: Towards a Radical Humanism”, presented at MansA - Maison des Mondes Africains, based on an original concept by Paula Nascimento.

The exhibition brings together nine artists around the thought and legacy of Amílcar Cabral, a figure in the struggles for independence in Guinea-Bissau and Cape Verde. Through photography, video, textiles, drawing and installation, the works examine the transmission of his ideas and their resonance in contemporary art.

Armelle Dakouo, commissaire générale de la 15e édition des Rencontres de Bamako, Biennale Africaine de la Photographie, présente un nouveau projet curatorial à Paris.

Aux côtés de l’historienne Ângela Benoliel Coutinho, elle assure le commissariat de l’exposition « Amílcar Cabral : pour un humanisme radical », présentée à MansA – Maison des Mondes Africains, sur une idée originale de Paula Nascimento.

Cette exposition réunit neuf artistes autour de la pensée et de l’héritage d’Amílcar Cabral, figure des luttes pour l’indépendance de la Guinée-Bissau et du Cap-Vert. À travers la photographie, la vidéo, le textile, le dessin et l’installation, les œuvres interrogent la transmission de ses idées et leur résonance dans la création contemporaine.

With the Curatorial Team · Preparing the 15th edition
One month ago, Ange-Frédéric Koffi ( @colligit.truncis ), co-curator of the 15th edition of the Bamako Encounters, was in Bamako alongside General Curator Armelle Dakouo and the Biennial teams.
Visits, meetings, production and scenography: an intensive week shaping REFABULATION(S) in Bamako.
An artist, curator and art historian, Ange-Frédéric Koffi works on image regimes, historical narratives and postcolonial legacies. In 2026, he notably curated SETTLED at the Mulhouse Photography Biennial and Danser l’histoire in Douala. He is also a recipient of the 2026 ADIAF Emergence Grant and Foam Talent 2022.
The official programme of the 15th edition continues to take shape and will be announced soon.
Meanwhile, cultural venues, independent spaces and project holders in Bamako can apply to the OFF with projects across all disciplines.

Artists, cultural venues and independent spaces in Bamako: applications for the OFF programme of the 15th edition open today, 5 October.
Part of the history of the Bamako Encounters across several editions, the OFF connects artistic initiatives across the city with the Biennial. Exhibitions, concerts, performances, screenings and projects from all artistic disciplines can apply.
Artists may also submit a project when a venue in Bamako has confirmed its commitment to host it.
Selected projects will officially join the 2026 OFF programme and be featured across the Biennial’s platforms.

Preparing the 15th edition · An intensive week in Bamako

Last week, General Curator @armelledk Dakouo and co-curator Ange-Frédéric Koffi (@colligit.truncis ) were in Bamako for a week of curatorial visits: exhibition spaces, meetings with artists and cultural operators, discussions with the teams, scouting, and working sessions on production and scenography.

The team also visited the technical facilities of printing partners involved in the Biennial, alongside Delegate General El Hadj Amadou Diop, Tidjane Sangaré, Director of the Maison Africaine de la Photographie, and Seydou Camara, Technical Director of Yamarou Photo and production advisor for this edition.

Préparer la 15e édition · Une semaine intense à Bamako

La semaine dernière, Armelle Dakouo, commissaire générale, et Ange-Frédéric Koffi, co-commissaire, étaient à Bamako pour une semaine de visites curatoriales : visites d’espaces, rencontres avec des artistes et opérateurs culturels, échanges avec les équipes, prospection et réunions autour de la production et de la scénographie.

L’équipe a également visité les installations techniques de partenaires d’impression mobilisés pour la Biennale, aux côtés du Délégué Général El Hadj Amadou Diop (@elhadjadiop ), de Tidjane Sangaré, directeur de la Maison Africaine de la Photographie, et de @seydou.camara.39 , directeur technique de @yamarouphoto et conseiller à la production de cette édition.
