I can use this #fossilfriday to announce another paper that I was involved with!
This time we can introduce the first Ornithomimosaurs from the Early Cretaceous of Northwestern Germany. While we only describe just two fossils, they turned out to be quiet fun, finding one of the oldest cousins of the famous #ornithomimus and #gallimimus .
These critters, with the spanisch Pelecanimimus have unique fingers and share with tyrannosaurs and some other groups a special condition within the metatarsal

Sh*ts and Giggles aside: This is the first paper that started as we gathered as friends at the University to learn more about the theropod dinosaurs of Germany. I hope that we can present you more surprises in the future and that the joy and progress we made as a team never ends. Paleoartworks and info chart were done by the amazing @joschuaknuppe

I am very happy to report that our paper about diplodocoidea is finally out. Intended to be the one of several papers for these wonderful dinosaurs, this marks hopefully the start for more love for these dinosaurs.. also yes, I still want to look more for diplodocids - the paper is open access and includes also the brilliant input of (but not only) @whitlock_lab @lucas.lerzo and @fossilcrates

Happy to bring you this #fossilfriday a new special exhibition at the @lippisches.landesmuseum - I joined @pterodude and the folks at the museum to bring this small journey to dead whales, odd seals and other marine critters of Northrhine-Westphalia to you. Enjoy the dive in! #paleontology #whales #scicomm #marinemammals by @renddrichs

Who lives in a pineapple under the sea? Not these one. Because a.) these horseshoe crabs lived in the Late Jurassic of Bavaria, and b.) Because their lagoon was saltier than every political debate. Have some beautifully preserved Mesolimulus at the Jura-Museum in Eichtstätt. #fossilfriday #fossils #jurassic #xiphosura #horseshoecrab taken in Jura-Museum by @renddrichs

Under construction for #fossilfriday
Arapahoe, the diplodocid visits the @dinosauriermuseum and is now becoming your “watch how it is really done” experience. With your visit, you can see what work must be done to really put a dinosaur on display. A huge acknowledgment to the amazing work that preparators, designers, and all other fascinating people will do to give us the closest thing to a standing diplodocid for more than 150 million years. Enjoy!

Have you either seen an infant cave bear cub? No? Neither did I until I visited the special exhibition “überLeben in der Eiszeit“ at the @ruhrmuseum in Essen. Go visit it! #fossil #fossilfriday #bear by @renddrichs

I am happy to announce that the new permanent exhibition at @naturkundemuseumkarlsruhe opened, where Karlsruhe tells the story of hominid evolution. I can also finally report that I was involved with creating the concept of the exhibition. While I had to go to new adventures, I passionately followed the progress and the evolution of the exhibition, just like you can follow our own evolution in this new arrangement.

Personal highlights are the reconstructions by Elizabeth Daynes and @_quagga, but also the different approach to connect important steps in our evolution with scientific communication. Remember, we are not also here by coincidence (as evolution is), but also we perfected our unique way of communication. Enjoy! #museum

This #fossilfriday - Time for a book!
When I heard that Achim Schwermann, @sven_sachs and @joschuaknuppe would join together to publish a book on the latest winners of the german fossil of the year (by @palaeontologische_gesellschaft) - I was excited. Although plesiosaurs are not something I studied yet, the fact that we got four named taxa from different points of time in my homestate is always amazing to tell. Now, what do I think of it?

First, I was not sure what kind of story we would get, as the plesiosaurs themself offer a lot of narration. Their biology, evolution and the open questions could fill even entire lectures. But as it turns out, the authors allow themself to tell even a bigger story. One that is more about the history of paleontology in our region, which is obviously linked to the ''protagonists''. It praises the fossil record in general, giving a healthy space for more than plesiosaurs. Just like in nature, you should find more than just one type of creature in a healthy ecosystem. The book takes you by the hand for a very grounded walkthrough into the basics of paleontology, historic points in Northrhine-Westphalia and the people, who help us all to imagine what amazing animals lived near our housedoor.

I definetly recommend this book to everyone that is interested into paleontology (regardless of level of knowledge) and also think that this book is a good start to plan your vacations and visiting all the museums and fossil localities, where the true Nessies are found.

Thank you to the authors and the artist for this gem!

Last #fossilfriday of this year.
Short year summary: what the f*ck was that?!

The long version: This year taught me [brutally] to be thankful for what I have/I had and that change is a lifetime companion. I am thankful to finally publish more as a paleontologist, which I pray to do more in the future. I am thankful to have met new people, reconnect with some and share thoughts and laughters. I want to thank especially the teams of @dinopark_teufelsschlucht and @sauriermuseumaathal each for their open arms, their kindness and giving me some of the best moments I had this year.

And with that, getting suited up for 2026, having many open questions and hopes, thank you for coming along.

For this #fossilfriday - how about a hidden gem? The small Mammoth museum in Niederweningen, Switzerland, was on my bucket list for a while now. The city is blessed with the situation that mammoths are found whenever they want to build something new. I look forward for the next mammoth and the poor souls from the building companies that have to report their advisors that they found “another one”.

To celebrate the publication of @dino_doctor at this #fossilfriday - here is my first encounter with Olorotitan. This mount (most likely a cast?) is on display at the geological museum of Yichun is shown together with other Asian hadrosaurs - but the headcrest is what impresses me the most about this dinosaur! #dinosaur #hadrosaur #paleontology #fossils by @renddrichs
