Psychoanalytic Supervision Groups begin October 15th! With Dr. Vanessa Sinclair

Beginning Thursday, October 15th, I will be facilitating online Psychoanalytic Supervision Groups! LINK IN TREE

To start, I have scheduled two psychoanalytic supervision groups – beginning Thursday, October 15th and Tuesday, October 20th – to accommodate as many time zones as possible. Each group will meet for a 50-minute hour. Participants will take turns presenting case material (one case per session).

Tuesdays at 12 noon London (7AM NYC | 13:00 Stockholm | 14:00 Beirut | 8PM Seoul | 9PM Brisbane | 10PM Melbourne) for one hour (50 mins).

Thursdays at 12 noon NYC (9AM Vancouver | 5PM London | 18:00 Stockholm | 19:00 Beirut) for one hour (50 mins).

I am planning to begin with each group meeting every other week on alternate weeks. I will happily adjust this around the holidays to ensure each group meets twice per month. I will post the schedule of exact dates at Dr. Vanessa Sinclair’s Psychoanalytic Supervision Groups Substack soon. Subscribe to stay up to date!

If your time zone allows for you to participate in both groups, you are welcome to!
To join, simply become a paid subscriber at Dr. Vanessa Sinclair’s Psychoanalytic Supervision Groups Substack and you will receive the zoom links to attend meetings live.

Join us Wednesday, October 14th, as Mary Wild presents Neurosis On Film online for RU Center for Psychoanalysis! Event begins at 4PM London (11AM NYC) and runs for 2 hours. (LINK in tree in bio)

This lecture explores how cinema portrays anxious, obsessive, and self-sabotaging characters grappling with repression and existential doubt.

NOTE: This event will be recorded. All registrants will receive a video link after the livestream.

Neurosis has long been a subject of fascination in psychoanalysis, literature, and cinema. First coined by Scottish physician William Cullen in 1769, the term originally described nervous disorders with no clear physiological cause. It was later redefined and popularised by Sigmund Freud, who placed neurosis at the heart of psychoanalytic theory, linking it to unresolved trauma, repression, and unconscious conflict. Freud believed that when painful experiences cannot be fully processed, they manifest through symptoms such as anxiety, perfectionism, compulsive behaviour, low self-worth, phobias, and obsessive thoughts.

MORE INFO & REGISTER HERE.

Though neurosis was removed from formal psychiatric classifications in 1980, its psychological and cultural relevance endures—particularly in cinema, where film provides a powerful medium for exploring inner turmoil. This lecture examines how neurosis is represented on screen, analysing characters who struggle with anxiety, emotional rigidity, and a resistance to change. From overthinkers and self-saboteurs to commitment-phobes and existential wanderers, we will seek insight into the complex psychology of film’s most inhibited figures and their ongoing preoccupations.

Titles covered:
Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961) Blake Edwards
Hannah and Her Sisters (1986) Woody Allen
Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994) Mike Newell
Adaptation (2002) Spike Jonze
Synecdoche, New York (2008) Charlie Kaufman
Les Amours Imaginaires (2010) Xavier Dolan

Mary Wild @psycstar is a leading voice in cinema studies, and the creator of the Projections lecture series at Freud Museum London, applying psychoanalysis to film interpretation. She is the author of Psychoanalysing Horror Cinema (Routledge) by @renderingunconscious

In today’s Magic Monday post at our Patreon, I share a runacle for the coming three months’ phase, as well as the background of the runacle method:

”There are different ways of ”casting” the runes, as there are different ways to lay a Tarot spread. Some are simple and direct, others are more complex. I’ve devised a method that ties in to the three Norns (weavers of Fate) in the Nordic mythology. They are Urd (the past), Verdandi (the present), and Skuld (the future). To use them together gives an issue or question a full range of insight, not necessarily dealing with a strict chronology but certainly with a great overview potential. I usually also divide each section in similar triads, meaning Urd is also divided into Urd, Verdandi, and Skuld, as are the others. This places Verdandi (and perhaps especially Verdandi of Verdandi) as the great core essence, flanked by an origin and a (potential) outcome.”
