I started fostering Rusty in the summer of 2022. The shelter told me about a dog that wasn't doing well. He was shut down and had been through more trauma than any living creature should ever experience. I picked him up and something in my heart clicked. I know the value of fostering, especially older dogs like Rusty, but there was something about him that told me, "don't let this dog go." So I didn't. I adopted him four months later.

If you never got to meet him, let me tell you about him. He was gentle. He was sweet. He loved people, dogs, cats, kids (he thought they were puppies). He loved his toys, especially his spiky ball, and he holds the record for toy destruction of 45 seconds. He snored so loud, I could hear it over my white noise at night. He would fart, a lot, and he'd leave the room after he did it. He never barked, but if you got him excited, he'd give you the biggest awoo you've ever heard and he'd say it with his whole chest.

When he came to me, he had severe separation anxiety from being abandoned multiple times. He was scared of car rides. He was scared of water. He was scared of yelling. But then, eventually, he swam in lakes and ran through the waves on the beach. He started sticking his head out the car window and sniffing the air. He learned that yelling was often me shouting, "STINKY!" and having him chase me around the house. He learned that I would always be there for him. No matter what.

Cancer took him and I don't think I will ever stop being angry about it. He was given 6-8 months after his diagnosis. He gave me 9. He gave me every day he could until his body finally gave up. He was surrounded by his favorite people, his favorite toys, and all his blankets. I kept my promise. I was with him to the end.

Four years wasn't enough time, but he changed so much of me in those years. Softer. Kinder. He made me better in more ways than I can name.
