Bogotá will always have a special place in my heart.

What started as a trip to Colombia became so much more because of one incredible family. From the moment I arrived, I was welcomed with kindness, love, and open arms.

Meeting my teacher in person for the first time, being introduced to her family, sharing meals, laughter, stories, and memories these are moments I’ll never forget. I’ll never forget the phone call with her mom, who told me that I was part of the family. It was one of those moments that made me feel truly at home.

Thank you for making me feel like family. Bogotá wasn’t just a destination; it became a home away from home.

I will always be grateful. 🩵🇨🇴

Eva's Initiatives for Homeless Youth is truly the heart, the pulse of Mode Canada Rocks, a Canadian not-for-profit.

There's a selflessness to being a community leader few talk about:
The unseen work.
The personal sacrifices -- and societal indignities.
The determination to keep promises made to those who depend on you, even when there's almost no determination left.

Eva Smith (1923-1993) was such a leader, and she poured all her determination into a brighter future for Toronto's youth. Immigrating from Jamaica in the 1950s, Ms. Smith knew the importance of a good education, and realized that for young people, access to safe, consistent housing could make or break their futures. Ms. Smith also saw how ill-equipped adult shelters were to support specific needs for youth at risk.

Not on her watch.

Despite passing a year before Eva's Place, the first shelter opened in 1994, Ms. Smith's indomitable spirit fuels the Eva’s organization's outreach, tackling challenges from housing to career guidance and future planning.

Eva's Initiatives represents what happens when we believe in ourselves, and our community.

Eva's Initiatives: Our com.unity Engine

The late Eva Smith, a Jamaican immigrant, educator, and community activist, believed young people deserved to thrive. And she fought hard to make sure young people, the ones at risk of being left behind, got a fighting chance to survive.

That same energy keeps Eva's Initiatives for Homeless Youth going today, and has com.unity by MODECANADAROCKS fired up to support Eva Smith's (the original founder), and the charitable organization's inspired and tireless work.

Don't take our word for it, Reno Valay shared how Eva's Initiatives brought new possibilities to him. The result? Valay chose the future of multi-hyphenate creative, travelling Canada and the world as a music artist, actor and model.

Together we're capable of making big changes with com.unity, all we have to do is start.

Thank you to @evasinitiatives for allowing me to share my story, and thank you to @modecanadarocks for creating the space to have these conversations.

Lived experience matters. When we make room for real stories, we open the door to deeper understanding, reflection, and change.
