Formar guías locales es fortalecer comunidades. 🌊

-

Training local guides strengthens communities. 🌊

In Nuquí, R&E supports training for local whale- and dolphin-watching guides, connecting scientific knowledge with local experience and knowledge of the territory.

Why do local guides matter?

• Training can open employment opportunities and help tourism benefits remain within the community.

• Guides share knowledge of marine species and respectful wildlife-watching practices with visitors.

• They pass on what they learn to families, colleagues and communities, extending the reach of environmental education.

• Their local knowledge can contribute to marine monitoring and conservation.

Training goes beyond species identification: it helps guides explain responsible distance, approach, interaction duration and vessel speed.

Thank you to everyone sharing their knowledge and commitment to responsible tourism in the Gulf of Tribugá.

🌊🎧 What can we learn when we stop and listen to the ocean?

The ocean is filled with sound. Whales call across great distances, dolphins communicate using whistles and clicks, fish produce a surprising variety of sounds, and human activities contribute noise from vessels, construction, and scientific operations.

Passive Acoustic Monitoring - commonly known as PAM, is a method used to record and study underwater sounds.

Using underwater microphones called hydrophones, researchers can listen to marine environments without transmitting sound into the water.

Depending on the species and study design, PAM can help researchers:

🐋 Detect whales and dolphins, even when they cannot be seen
🎧 Recognize certain species through their vocalizations
🌙 Monitor animals at night, in poor weather, or in remote locations
📅 Explore daily and seasonal patterns in acoustic activity
🚢 Study underwater noise and its overlap with marine life
🌊 Better understand how animals use their habitats
🛡️ Support research and marine conservation

PAM does not replace visual observations. Instead, it provides another important window into the underwater world, one that helps us investigate what may be happening beyond the reach of our eyes.

The R&E Ocean Community Conservation team will be highlighting the key steps of Passive Acoustic Monitoring, from hydrophones and marine mammal vocalizations to spectrograms, underwater noise, and conservation applications.

This is the continuation of our journey into the ocean’s soundscape.
Save this post and follow the series as we learn to listen beneath the surface. 🌊🎧
