What a day for Houston!

Congratulations to @breadoflifehtx on the Knowles-Rowland House and their continued investment in our unhoused neighbors. Funds from the Biden administration helped make this happen, proof that our federal government should be investing in local organizations.

It was an honor to sit down in Houston with Lonnie Ali, a dedicated philanthropist and the widow of the late Muhammad Ali.

Muhammad Ali left his mark on our city, from his historic fights at the Astrodome to his stand against the Vietnam War.

We talked about the Muhammad Ali Index, which measures compassion in cities across the world. And Lonnie's work to carry Muhammad's legacy forward by bringing people together and encouraging us to care for our neighbors.

Our HBCUs aren’t just historic institutions—they are living sanctuaries of Black brilliance, resilience, and endless potential.

And today, that sacred mission just received a powerful multi-million dollar boost.

Congressman Christian D. Menefee announced that Texas Southern University has been awarded $4.2 million in federal funding through the U.S. Department of Education’s Supplemental HBCU Mandatory Grants program. Additionally, neighboring Prairie View A&M University was awarded $4.5 million—continuing the deep legacy of federal advocacy championed for decades by the late Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee.

As TSU approaches its historic Centennial milestone, these federal dollars represent far more than line items on a balance sheet. They mean upgraded facilities, expanded academic research, cutting-edge workforce training, and direct support for young scholars who carry our community’s future on their shoulders.
