Join us this week for the University of Essex's Annual Art History Lecture, delivered by REPLACE's PI @giuseppantony (Associate Professor of Heritage and Human Geography at Durham University) and her colleague @dacia_viejorose (Associate Professor of Heritage at the University of Cambridge, and the Director of @cambridge_heritage Research Centre).

Lecture title: Heritage Time In-Between Then and Now: Exploring the Afterlives of Disaster

Drawing on their ongoing monograph project, the two-part lecture series reflects on how communities experience time in the aftermath of earthquakes, by examining several seismic events in the Apennine region of Italy through longitudinal and ethnographic research. The two lectures are:
Lecture 1:
Earthquakes and Their Aftermaths: Heritage and the Experience of In-Between Time
Wednesday 3 June 2026, 11:00am-1:00pm (EBS.1.1)

Lecture 2:
Polyrhythms of Heritage Time: Acceleration, Slowness, and the Hold of the Future
Thursday 4 June 2026, 2:00pm-4:00pm (EBS.1.1)

After the lecture on Thursday, there will be a small reception hosted by the REPLACE project, where we can discuss the lecture in more detail!

Un altro appuntamento con la nostra mini serie di video racconti su LAquila, in occasione di @laquila2026.

Oggi parliamo di ferratelle: cialde cotte tra due piastre di ferro. Negli stampi roventi, le geometrie delle nonne che ricordano, in miniatura, il rosone di Collemaggio e le vetrate perfette delle chiese Aquilane.
Un dialogo tra arte monumentale e gesto quotidiano.
E forse non è un caso che chi cresce tra queste geometrie poi continui a cercare linee, simmetrie e segni anche altrove, sulla pelle, nell’arte.

Continua la nostra mini serie di video racconti su LAquila, in occasione di @laquila2026. E' la volta di Ju Boss: “C’era una vineria all’Aquila: Ju Boss… ci passavamo sempre il tempo lì, poi Ju Boss ha chiuso a causa del terremoto… e molti di noi hanno perso un piccolo punto di riferimento, che può sembrare banale, ma era importante. L’8 dicembre 2009 Ju Boss ha riaperto, e la città era piena, stracolma di gente… ci siamo ritrovati in tantissimi: eravamo migliaia, tutti lì per riconnetterci. Sono tornate anche persone che si erano trasferite, che già vivevano altrove. E quello, diciamo, Ju Boss per me e per il mio gruppo di amici era come le Colonne per i nostri genitori.”

L’Aquila è capitale italiana della cultura 2026 ( @laquila2026 ). Noi vogliamo omaggiarla con ciò che abbiamo raccolto in ascolto, nel tempo lento della ricostruzione.
Da oggi, proporremo una piccola serie di video-interviste, registrate nel 2025, che parlano di attaccamento al luogo, e di storie della città attraverso oggetti. Un progetto nato dall’incontro tra il programma di ricerca REPLACE e Studio Miral, che da qualche anno raccontano di luoghi feriti da terre-moti.
Inauguriamo la mini serie non con un oggetto, ma con un video su cosa voglia dire investire in un luogo ferito da un terremoto. Partiamo da @liberamiacaffeletterario

Here are some sneak peeks of 'Immersive Italia Terremotata', a collaboration between @storylab_aru and the REPLACE project. Immersive Italia Terremotata builds on the narrative explored in the first Italia Terremotata, exploring a narrative structure that tells a story of the Irpinia earthquake and its legacy in Senerchia.

REPLACE will be in Senerchia this weekend for 'Memoria Futura' remembering the earthquake of 1980 on its anniversary weekend, and celebrating the future of the town looking forward.

We are getting ready for our event - SENERCHIA 1980 - 2025: MEMORIA FUTURA, where we are hoping to continue building the digital archive of Senerchia, shown in this video. This clip shows a tour around the virtual platform WebGL, which can be used by the community as a virtual archive, as well as a space to share memories, and explore the town's heritage that was lost during the 1980 Irpinia Earthquake.

Our partner The Virtual Experience Company has worked with us to develop this accessible platform so that communities can use this space as a place to store and share photos and videos of their places.

An event to remember, to tell our stories, and to look ahead.

45 years after the 1980 earthquake, the Department of Philosophical, Historical and Interdisciplinary Studies (PHAIS) of the University of Essex and the Social Promotion Association “La Ginestra APS” are organizing a day of memory, dialogue and technology in the heart of the Senerchia community.

Screening of the documentary Italia Terremotata, filmed right in Senerchia: a powerful story that brings together 3D, storytelling and collective memory.

Dialogue between generations – those who lived through the earthquake and those who know it only through the stories – to build a future memory together.

Immersive virtual-reality experiences will allow us to “see again” Senerchia as it was before the quake.
The day will end with a convivial refreshment.

For those who cannot be there in person, it will be possible to follow the event live on social channels:

Un evento per ricordare, raccontare e guardare avanti. A 45 anni dal sisma del 1980, il Dipartimento di Studi Filosofici, Storici e Interdisciplinari (PHAIS) dell’Università dell’Essex e l’Associazione di Promozione Sociale “La Ginestra APS” organizzano una giornata di memoria, dialogo e tecnologia, nel cuore della comunità di Senerchia.
- Proiezione del documentario Italia Terremotata, girato proprio a Senerchia: un racconto potente che unisce 3D, storytelling e memoria collettiva.
- dialogo tra generazioni – chi ha vissuto il terremoto e chi lo ha conosciuto solo attraverso i racconti – per costruire insieme una memoria futura.
- Esperienze immersive in realtà virtuale permetteranno di “rivedere” la Senerchia com’era prima del sisma.
La giornata si chiuderà con un rinfresco conviviale.

Our PI is in Abu Dhabi this week to take part in the Digital Heritage Forum, where she is co-convening a session on "Future of the Past: Risk Mapping, Communication and Community Resilience in Cultural Landscapes"

This event brings together practitioners, academics and technicians to explore how technology is transforming cultural heritage practices and research
