Ned Collette’s last few records (including the latest) have been slow-burners that sound like good if understated albums on first listen before lines and melodies gradually worm their way into your brain and you find the LP in constant rotation. While this may seem like a back-handed comment, I mean it as anything but - these are the best kind of listening experiences! To be perhaps a little over the top, it’s records like these that are a balm to the disposable immediacy of the streaming age!

On Mixed Light, Collette is again joined by a luminous list of players—Leah Senior, Joe Talia, Chris Abrahams, Judith Hamann, and Bonnie “Prince” Billy to name a handful— that depart from the UK folk leanings of the last few towards something a little more psych-rock heavy. Words still sit at the fore, with surreal images sitting on metaphorical edges (between wake and sleep, night and day, in frame and out of it) drifting through accompanied by lush instrumentation that is even more expansive: spindly guitars, slinking bass lines, pulsing synths, flamenco-esque acoustic playing, horns and even a xylophone kicking around in there playing everything from krauty drives to a jaunty interlude. Yet this is no sudden turn, with one of these tracks that has their roots in recording sessions back in 2008. What more could you expect from the Collette stamp of quality?? Can’t wait to play it again!
–Mitch

Open as usual today, listening to the new Godflesh, which has been a common occurrence the last few weeks…

What’s there to say about Godflesh? A band that’s been around as many years as I have (38) now onto their 10th studio LP. At other points in my life hearing the news of a new Godflesh album would’ve had me internally thought, “Mucho respecto to Justin Broadrick and Ben Green, who I’m sure are still operating with xtreme integrity, but imma sit this one out”. But for some reason I have been fully ready for and foaming at the mouth in anticipation for ‘Decay’.

For those that may hold a similar glad-they’re-still-at-it-but-not-that-interested opinion, or “into the early gear but haven’t kept up”, I’d like to inform you that Godflesh is still very much the same language. The core cathartic and satisfying bludgeoning via drum machine, bass, guitar and vocals is there and it hasn’t been toned down. That’s not to say Godflesh hasn’t progressed, the Alesis HR-16 drum machine has very much been replaced. Check out side B’s opener ‘Fear Of Man’, for a rhythm as cold and grime-y as anything this side of an Eskibeat! An unexpected highlight of music in 2026! – Nic

I was convinced this was going to be a special one within the first minute or two. A tranquil but compelling instrument “rock” ditty, vibrantly detailed but humming with atmosphere, warm bottoms and crisp tops, not high nor low-fidelity. Beautiful!

Yep, our Illawarra favs Blue Divers are back four years on from ‘II’, with ‘Hiddenness Songs’, a compact disc that certainly feels like Blue Divers, even if the mode-of-operation has changed from slightly sprawling to stripped back. Guitar, bass and drums, recorded in a very live-in-a-room manner, conjuring a similar feeling to Love Chants, the airier side of PSF associated Japanese psych, Primitive Motion, Fleetwood Mac’s ‘Then Play On’ and Chris Brokaw’s End Of The Night. Sublime stuff, and I don’t mean ‘Santeria’!

A side note: On numerous occasions I’ve recommended Blue Divers to people looking to buy a gift for someone who’s already exhausted the discographies of Mick Turner, Jim White, post-rock-ish instrumental stuff on Constellation Records, or the Drag City universe and the feedback is always that I was spot on. It’s time y’all grumpy uncs all got on board the Blue Divers train choooo chooo! – Nic

Seeing the short clip from Goner Fest got me into Animal Piss, It’s Everywhere FOMO mode, so time to revisit their killer 1st LP that we’ve finally got a decent amount of before their 3rd lands later this year!

Comprising of members from a range of long-running psych groups (Wet Tuna, Pigeons, Weeping Bong Band), APIE’s 2023 debut takes a cosmic country trip through honky-tonk turns of phrase that meet shoot-the-shit humour with the kind of loose bar band sound perfected on Crazy Horse’s American Stars and Bars.

These songs toe a fine line between the hilarious and sincere with a tinge of the surreal, from the tongue in cheek (loving Jesus cos he can turn water into wine), to finding success sucking at success, to being refused service at the bar for walking in naked but hanging out anyway, to writing your will, to the joys of cheapo wine. An album that can hold the down and out in the same hand as the ridiculous and hilarious as all the best country music should.

Dunno if I’ve ever had so many people ask in the shop what was playing and pick up a copy off first listen - totally endearing and charismatic music!!! –Mitch

Animal Piss, It’s Everywhere - Animal Piss, It’s Everywhere (Half A Million, 2023), New LP, $54.95 (also available as a 2-albums-on-1-CD set with their sophomore LP, Grace for $22.95)

Alzheimer Blanks follow up their certified ‘Best of 2025’ self titled cassette with another top assemblage of non-genre aligned, psychedelic electronic works on ‘More Is More’. The duo of Richard Costa and Nick Senger (whose collective resume includes Brando’s Island, The Zingers and Castings) weave together a weird and mesmerising tapestry of found sound, tape and synthesizer tom foolery.

Source materials are subject to AB’s own internal logic, apparently free from the rigidity of the midi-clock, but my ear/mind says it’s not random, there’s some advanced sense of rhythm and timing going on here. You know the way Aaron Dilloway’s 8-track tape cartridge compositions sometimes feel a bit like a J Dilla beat? AB’s are kinda like that. The broad, unaligned scope of things I hear on ‘More Is More’ includes the no-rules tape/synth works of Robert Turman, Severed Heads and Carl Stone obtusely colliding styles the masses would associate with music where samplers and other desktop electronic boxes are at the centre of the production. Most of this album continues and improves upon the path of their debut, but expands into sprawling new territory on the 26min long ‘Cosmic O’Brien’. Wowie! – Nic
