Honestly, don't bother reading "Enemy Feminisms," just read this review. {Link in bio.} I don't know of many experiences more profoundly gratifying than reading a review such as this one - by Dayna Tortorici @dtortorici in @nplusonemag - that doesn't just *get it* (although that part feels incredible), but humbles and educates in the most exciting way, making the stakes of the matter even clearer than I was able to fully understand, let alone articulate. What an honor... goddamn. But then, I've always found that the best moment in the whole business of writing is the one when someone (in this case, Dayna, to whom I say *thank you* from the bottom of my heart) shows me anew what I was actually trying to say, trying to do. by @reproutopia

NEW NOVEMBER COURSE! Nowhere—as the women’s liberation movement used to relentlessly point out—is more dangerous for a child than the family.

In the ’70s, a wave of feminist, child-liberationist consciousness-raising blew the lid off the everyday phenomena of incest sexual abuse and domestic violence.

This movement hoped to transform the power dynamics of the American family wholesale, such that family members could no longer perpetrate abuse with such impunity.

But despite their efforts, nothing changed fundamentally about the organization of the private nuclear household, whose central function within capitalism only expanded under neoliberalism.

Instead, a carceral family-surveillance matrix sprang up. It remains the case that 5 kids in the U.S. die every single day from abuse and neglect. And “child removal” remains in many cases a cure worse than the disease, with foster homes often perversely recreating the very abuses that were initially the cause for separating a child from kin.

With these miserable outcomes in mind, scholars and activists have begun to ask: What would it mean to abolish the American child welfare system? In what ways has “child welfare” come to mean what sociologist Dorothy Roberts calls “family policing”—i.e., the state’s disciplining of poor communities’ everyday lives via Child Protective Service investigations, mandated reporting, and termination of parental rights?

How has “child welfare” served to punish poverty and Blackness by defining both as morally culpable and unworthy of parenthood status? What does it look like to abolish family policing, and how does it intersect with complimentary calls to abolish the family itself?

“Family Policing: Welfare, Surveillance, and Abolition” with @reproutopia starts online Sunday, November 22nd.

Wednesday night was really magical in that flow femme state, comradely caring, lipstick theoretical type of way. I was admittedly emotionally raw going into our conversation, but Sophie made me feel so supported and seen—all that melted and gave way to talking through some of the hard femme realities, invitations to *do* femme as a verb, and raise all our imaginative whorizons toward the utopian.

So many whores, anarchists, commies—women, femmes, butches, butch/femme, enbies and men—who I’ve known and organized alongside for almost 15 years were there. New to me comrades offered hugs and questions, challenges and affirmations. We also brought in our loved ones who are no longer with us, or who are kept from us by incarceration. I left @pilsencommunitybooks feeling emboldened, hopeful, and re-energized.

I remain grateful for Sophie, and the worlds she weaves with her words—never compromising on horniness, play, incisive political analysis and the stakes at hand. It’s a utopian marxism shot through cultural criticism that welcomes drug users, femmes, whores, horny queers and trans people as makers/doers/laborers/COMRADES. She invites push and pull, embraces messy slippages, and finds those touchable places within us worth tonguing until we grasp their collective power.

Here’s to the fall of capitalism. Here’s to the end of the nuclear family, white supremacy, patriarchy, policing, borders, whorephobia, transphobia, and femmephobia. Here’s to femmephilic earnestness—communizing care, femmunism, dropping acid, Sophie’s “beautiful militants hell-bent on regeneration” and like di Prima taught us: “the best thing to do with a mimeograph is to drop it / from a five story window, on the head of a cop.” by @reproutopia
