Time to meet the artists for ‘The Warp and the Weft’ ; an open call exhibition showcasing the work of Sussex based artists and makers.

Meet artist REQ!

Meet artist REQ @reqimage . With roots in the graffiti and street art movement, REQ has developed a distinctive practice spanning painting, muralism and large scale public work. His highly detailed paintings combine technical precision with an interest in perception, place, time and the way images become embedded in memory. There is a strong sense of narrative in his work, often drawing the viewer into a particular moment while leaving space for interpretation. For The Warp and the Weft, REQ takes these ideas further, using the relationship between a figure, space and the physical process of painting to consider our experience of time and the possibility of something existing beyond it.

‘Warp and weft have a specific meaning in my approach to life and art. Weft is the ordinary view of time passing seemingly from future to past - from darkness to memory via the present moment which is symbolised by Lupin climbing the stairs. In the present moment the vertical Warp exists in ‘no time’ - eternity. The piece is a snapshot of that geometry where she navigates time but is not different from the vertical timeless. I’ve left the canvas mounted on the board I painted it on to reveal the procession of the act of painting as if it would never be completed.’
