The quiet hamlets of New York's Hudson Valley have long made it a special place for Marica McKeel, AIA, and her husband, who for years divided their time between there and New York City. In 2021, the couple made plans to put down permanent roots, purchasing a third-acre clearing with views of the Catskill Mountains. The intent was to build their dream home—one that included a studio large enough for her team of eight, and a separate bunkhouse where the city-based contingent could stay while they worked on local projects.

Navy Beach by Bates Masi + Architects
Honor Award | RD Architecture Awards 2026
Custom Rural or Vacation House

A steep bluff overlooking the bay forced Paul Masi, AIA, to site this house against the undeveloped lot's back edge in close proximity to a road and, more irksome, a diesel railway that spirits passengers throughout the Hamptons. Sound attenuation would become a design driver and inspiration for the two-story project, an exemplar of form fulfilling function.

A client with more than a passing interest in design is rare, but a client with a connection to a renowned 20th-century architect is next level. A physician couple relocating to Cary, North Carolina, had insight to the design process from a previous renovation they had undertaken and, more extraordinarily, from a personal tie to a pioneer of Modern architecture: one of their grandfathers was a protégé and then business partner of Mies van der Rohe. RACo. principal-in-charge Craig Kerins, AIA, knew then that their new residence would "honor her lineage and fascination with architecture."

Courtyard House by RUFproject
RD Architecture Awards 2026
Citation | Custom Urban House

"This is a strong design. It hits on everything we look for in a project," said the jury of this urban infill project in Vancouver. They loved how it was "tidy and spatially efficient" and was able to incorporate outdoor space. "It's a magic trick to get a courtyard on such a tight site," they marveled.

Sean Pearson, MRAIC, was laser-focused on making sure his clients could experience nature year-round given their urban setting and variable climate. "Vancouver's a dark and wet city in the winter," he notes. The courtyard spotlights a Japanese maple set in a naturalistic landscape, a mini-forest that changes with the seasons.

Not all client couples have the same vision for their dream house, and it often falls to the architect to creatively reconcile those competing desires. It's a common enough scenario, but perhaps not to the extent of this San Francisco-based couple with two daughters. S^A | Schwartz and Architecture met with them after they bought a challenging lot in California's wine country.

City Park Residence by Alterstudio Architecture
RD Architecture Awards 2026
Citation | Custom Urban House

Like cinematographers, Kevin Alter, Ernesto Cragnolino, FAIA, and Tim Whitehill orchestrated the experience of City Park Residence to set up expectations and discoveries. A meandering driveway previews the site. A pedestrian bridge entryway threads through trees and teases the forthcoming vistas through fully glazed interiors, but a solid wall at the front door momentarily redirects eyes back to an intimate courtyard until the barrier ends, and one has no shortage of landscapes to admire. "Once extraordinary things become normative, you start to forget how amazing they are," Kevin says. "Posing this back-and-forth between the different conditions of the site elevates the whole experience."

With its 12:12 pitched roof and a footprint measuring 148 feet long and 26 feet wide, Bar House is based on the region's 19th-century long barns. Their length came from the need for multipurpose spaces that could house grain, livestock, and equipment under one roof, often in distinct bays for each use, and with doors on one or both sides of the long elevation. Those simplified geometries were just the starting point on this project, but they made the four-bedroom house easy to build on the 4½-acre plot that backs up to protected land.

iolair by GO'C
RD Architecture Awards 2026
Citation | Custom Urban House

The chance to design the home of an arts residency program doesn't come by that often, and the firm GO'C made the most of it. Captivated by this live-work solution on Washington state's Orcas Island, the jury noted, "It's very strong on all levels: program, architecture, materials, interior. There's a fair bit of economy to it without sacrificing wonder or delight."

Cotton Estes's design for this Texas house was inspired by the Spanish colonial missions that stretch south along the river, about 7 miles from downtown San Antonio. These historic buildings—a UNESCO World Heritage Site—sit just a quarter-mile from her clients' property, which is tucked up against the national park that runs the missions' preservation and eco-restoration efforts.
