Everyone's talking about Jake Bauers today. @bleacherreport laid out his story this morning, and the lesson in it is pure Reset.

After the 2024 season, Bauers was done. A .199 average. Dead set on retiring.

Then his wife told him she was pregnant. "The only thing that brought me back was my wife got pregnant, and I'm like 'well, we need health insurance for these kids.'"

He didn't come back for baseball. He came back for his family.

Two years later: a go-ahead home run off Blake Snell in the NLCS. The biggest swing of his big league career.

Know your why. When the game isn't enough, play for something bigger than the game.

@drbradenbrown teaches it this way: feelings are data, not directives. Act on what matters most.

April 12, 2013. Fourth quarter, Lakers vs Warriors. Kobe Bryant plants on a drive and collapses. Torn Achilles. Season over in one step.

Watch what his mind does next. Not the season. Not next year. Just the next 10 seconds. Two free throws. A routine he’d rehearsed ten thousand times, holding steady while everything else collapsed. He makes both, ties it at 109, and walks off.

Let’s be clear about something. This isn’t a story about playing hurt. He walked off that court and had surgery. If you’re injured, get care. The lesson here is what his mind did in the 10 seconds after the worst happened.

@drbradenbrown teaches it as a sequence. Own it. Reset. Win the next controllable. You can’t control the catastrophe. You can always control the next 10 seconds.

Train the routine before you need it. Then trust it when everything falls apart. That’s the skill. And it’s trainable.

Three straight misses. Then a 47-yarder with no time left to beat No. 1 Texas.

Tate Sandell is the best kicker in college football. Lou Groza Award winner. And for three straight kicks, dating back to Georgia, he couldn't buy one. He even missed one to open this game.

Then 0:19 left, tie game, season on the line. His name gets called again.

Earlier this season, after a miss, he explained his whole approach: "I just try to stay as neutral as possible, use being naive as a tactic. Just try to keep my job as simple as possible and just wait for my name to be called."

That's the entire skill. The last kick doesn't get a vote on this one. Flush it. Kick this one.

Every kick is just a kick. Train it that way.

Zero interceptions. Zero wins.

C.J. Stroud is playing the best ball of his career. 347 yards and two touchdowns on Sunday. No picks all season. And his team is 0-4.

Two blown leads. Two losses in the final minute.

After the game, Dak Prescott found him at midfield and said what every athlete needs to hear: “just shake it off. Go get some wins, bro.”

You as an athlete cannot always control the scoreboard. You can control the next snap.

Shake it off. That’s the Reset.

El Último Tango.

Yesterday, Lionel Messi played his final game for Argentina. 85,000 fans at the Monumental. A penalty and two assists in a 3-0 win over Benin. 208 caps, 126 goals, 21 years in blue and white.

Afterward he wrote: "Yesterday was my last game, and I already miss wearing the blue and white. It's been an incredible journey, full of joy and also some sadness, but I know for sure that every step I took was worth it."

That is the skill: Reflect. Look back on your own journey, the wins and the hard parts, and name what each one taught you. Reflection isn't nostalgia. It's how the next chapter starts wiser.

1:14 left. Ball at the 40. Only a field goal needed.

Josh Allen escaped the rush, threw deep into triple coverage, and watched it get picked. Patriots kneel it out. 29-26.

253 yards, a go-ahead touchdown, the franchise record for touchdowns from scrimmage. And one throw ended it.

This one doesn't come from a win. It comes from a loss. That's the point.

Afterward he didn't dodge it. "Should throw that one out of bounds, live to fight another day."

The mistake isn't the story. The ten seconds after it are. The past is gone and the future isn't here. What's true right now? What's the next decision? That's neutral thinking, the way @drbradenbrown teaches it, and it's the whole game.

That's Reset. That's trainable.

Bottom of the 9th. Two outs. Bases loaded. Down 3-2. Mason Miller at 101.

Jackson Chourio fell behind 1-2. Fouled off 104. Spit on a slider that would have finished most hitters. And waited for the fastball he knew was coming.

"mentally I was just making sure that I was prepared for that."

Two years ago, he punched out as the last out against Seattle. He told himself he'd never make the last out again. Last night, he got the at-bat back.

That's Focus. When pressure hits, stay present on what you can control. One pitch at a time.

That's trainable.

Jeremiah Smith set two Ohio State records Saturday. His response? "I'm never satisfied."

That's not arrogance. It's a trained skill. Reset calls it Reflect: after the game, review, learn, and get better tomorrow.

Most athletes would let 11 catches, 206 yards, and 2 touchdowns satisfy them. Smith runs his process instead. "I'm chasing the greatest of the greatest."

Ohio State 31, Iowa 14. All-time leader in receptions. All-time leader in receiving touchdowns with 36.

You don't have to be born with that standard. You can practice it, one short rep at a time.

That's trainable.

That's what championship teams do.

Winner-take-all Game 3. Season on the line. The Fever fell 94-83 to the Aces in Vegas, and just like that the season was over.

Clark's night: 18 points on 6-of-18 shooting. An elbow to the mouth late. Back on the floor a minute later.

Then she sat at the presser and gave the Aces their flowers. No excuses. No blame. "We've got to give credit to the Aces. I thought they played well. I thought they were ready to go. That's what championship teams do."

Most athletes leave a loss hunting for blame. She left hers studying the team that beat her. Losing is information, not identity.

That's trainable.

What would you tell your kid?

Your kid boots a ground ball and you know exactly what to say. Flush it. Next play. You would never let them sit in it for three innings.

So why do you sit in it?

Last night Bryce Harper misplayed a fly ball in the 7th with the season on the line. Between innings he thought about his son Krew, and what he would tell him in that spot. An inning later he hit the tying homer. Phillies won 4-3 in 10 and forced Game 3.

The voice you use with your kid. Borrow it for yourself.

That's trainable.

October is 90% mental.

Yogi said it best: baseball is ninety percent mental and the other half is physical. Ten rings later, nobody's argued.

Tonight the Yankees and Red Sox play with Boston's season on the line. Win or go home. Every team left can hit. The difference is what happens between pitches.

That's trainable.

Only five teams are 3-0. One of them is the Las Vegas Raiders.

Two years ago, a torn Achilles ended Kirk Cousins' Vikings career. Atlanta paid him $180 million, drafted his replacement, and moved on. At 38, he signed in Las Vegas to be a bridge, a mentor for No. 1 overall pick Fernando Mendoza.

Then he started winning. Three games, three wins. A 35-27 comeback over the Saints on Sunday. Already matched last season's win total.

Cousins on the mentor role: "I don't want to be entitled or be given something I didn't earn. I think it's important that the best player plays."

And he's learning too. He asked the 22-year-old Mendoza to teach him the back-shoulder throw.

The mental training: want the role, not the title. Teach and steal. Let results argue.

Save this for the next time someone calls you a placeholder. Share it with Raider Nation.
