Healing isn’t walking away from everything that hurts.

Some things you should walk away from. Harm, abuse, anything that keeps breaking you. Leaving those is protecting yourself, not running.

But not every hard thing is harmful. Some of it is grief, disappointment, change, or people being human. Those don’t always need to be cut off. Sometimes they ask us to feel them, make sense of them, and decide what they get to mean.

That’s where we grow. We don’t become harder. We understand ourselves a little more each time. by @resetwithfarwa

The lessons we learnt in our childhood usually weren’t cruelty. They were survival, from people who didn’t have the room or the safety we have now.

Some of what we were raised with is wisdom. Some of it is just habit that nobody ever stopped to look at.

Honouring your elders doesn’t mean repeating their every pattern. You can love where you come from and still decide that something ends with you.

So when a relationship feels heavy, our first move is to manage it harder.

But managing another person is exhausting and it rarely works. Over-functioning for someone often keeps them exactly where they are, and keeps you there with them.

The shift is quieter than you’d expect. You stop auditioning for a different outcome and start tending to the person you’re becoming. Some people meet you there. Some don’t. Either way, you stop paying for it with yourself.

That isn’t giving up on people. It’s trusting Allah with the parts that were never yours to carry.

Nobody claps for roots.

They see you still standing and call it strength. They don’t see the years underneath: the quiet prayers, the patterns you decided would end with you, the slow work of becoming someone you could trust.

That part grew in the dark, with no audience and no applause, and it’s the reason you’re still here.

I spent years waiting to feel ready, sure, certain. Like my real self was hidden somewhere and would show up once I’d earned it.
It didn’t work that way. Who I am got built in small, unglamorous moments. Mostly the ones nobody saw.
