UNFELT

Outside the window, the last traces of daylight were fading. She was sitting by the window, listening to an old Tamil song and trying to ‘organise’ her thoughts.

Her eyes glistened in the dim light. Every now and then, she got distracted, pulled herself back, and started playing with her hair.

She could hear her mom chanting prayers. The smell of sambrani reached her before the words did. She paused the song and tried to listen more carefully.

Her heart and brain continued their merciless tug-of-war. She smiled, thinking about it, as if complicating things was her speciality.

A bird was chirping loudly from the tree near her window. It must have been calling out to someone.

Her dog came inside, as if it had come to inspect the whole room. The dog sniffed around every nook and corner, and then sniffed her too, probably checking whether she had eaten something without sharing. She laughed and ran her fingers through her thick brown hair. The dog left when the mom called.

From somewhere far away came the soulful sound of the kombu. Someone must have been practising, with the festival season getting closer.
She was amazed, thinking about the dedication of the person playing it. It had been a while since she had visited a festival or any function.

She tried to remember the feeling of touching an elephant when she was little. The memory was vague, but she could still remember the roughness beneath her small fingers. She wondered how hands and fingers could hold on to a memory for so long.

She had been numb for weeks now.
Sometimes, it drove her crazy, not being able to feel anything. She forced herself to eat spicy, tangy food even though she hated spicy food, just to feel something. She poked at old memories, tried to trigger herself, tried to make something move inside her.

Nothing did.

She was tired. She put the music back on and tried to calm herself. That was when her heart and brain started their tug-of-war.

Even they failed.

Her mom called out for her. She got up as if she had just woken from sleep, tied her hair into a bun, and walked away playfully...

Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about this proverb:
“Too much of anything is good for nothing.”
We have something similar in Malayalam: "Amithamayaal amruthum visham."
Even nectar becomes poison when there’s too much of it.

Recently, someone told me that being misunderstood is the worst feeling. And yes, it really hurts. It makes you want to explain yourself again and again, just to be seen correctly.

But then I thought… isn’t it equally strange to pretend we don’t understand something when we clearly do? Isn't that the worstest?

And isn’t it a little scary to be understood too well?

Sometimes, not being fully understandable feels like a couch. You can stay a little hidden, a little safe. But being understood completely can feel like standing at the edge of a cliff, not knowing what comes next, not knowing how much of yourself is suddenly visible.

Maybe that’s why we need balance. In how much we explain. In how much we expect others to understand. And in how much we expect from ourselves.
Sometimes it’s okay to be misunderstood, not have the right words to say, to pause, breathe, and not know what to do next.

We don’t always have to prove ourselves or be understood by everyone. Sometimes, that only weighs us down, and sometimes, the people around us too.

So be a little kinder to yourself. And to others.
The world could use a little more love and compassion, even when everything feels heavy right now.
It’s not going to be the same tomorrow...

With Love,
R

Hey,

A few words caught me recently, and they haven’t left. They poke at me, hide behind random thoughts, sometimes even haunt my sleep. “People who are really hiding, somewhere deep down, have that desire to be found, understood and clearly visible.”

But is that true? If it is, why do some people vanish and never stay found? Even when someone reaches them, they disappear again. What if they don’t want to be found at all? Not everyone who hides is longing to be discovered; maybe they were never lost. Maybe they’re simply reserved, choosing a slow, mundane life in peace, away from the rush and chaos. Perhaps there’s a classification among people who hide.
Why does everything have to be so deep and intense? What if it’s as plain as it seems - a person wants to get lost, and they did. That’s all...

You might wonder why I’m investing so much in a few words. I believe words have power. They make us see, think, sometimes go a little crazy. Like certain things, people, memories that get stuck with us. Exactly like that.

Maybe I just want you to think about this too. What if I get new perspectives? Also I admit, it’s comforting to know other minds work on the same question and arrive at different outcomes. How profound and beautiful is that now? So maybe that’s why I put these words out here. Hope I didn’t pick your brain too much... Even if I did a lil, then I secretly laugh and say, "thank you for joining me". :)

With Love,
R

After a long day!

A question really haunted me today. It made me feel so heavy. It’s been a while since I’ve felt something like this. First of all, though, I’m grateful for the question, and for that capacity for feelings that still got through me.

Coming to the question, "does that person hate everyone, or is it the hatred that’s keeping that person away from everyone?"

The question is really valid. But asking that to another person who knows only a few things about the other one makes it even more problematic, doesn’t it? Wouldn’t it have been easier to ask the question directly? Wouldn’t that give us more answers than assumptions or analysis?

Sometimes, how humans really work is so tricky. More like... we never really know!

Ugh. That’s not what I was coming to say.

So, I have a question for you…

Where do you find solace when anything or everything goes wrong?

Maybe someone. Maybe some place you call your couch, or something. If it’s a new thing for you, I think it’s high time you found one.

Not for anything in particular.

Maybe just for a warm coffee, little talks, a shoulder to lean on no matter what, tight hugs where everything melts down, just a presence, a place, food, or any little source of your own home and comfort.

Have you noticed children’s playhouses?

That little secure, comfy go-to place they have. Just like that, maybe we all need one too.

So let the little kid inside you find that solace. Let them have a place to go, a place to feel safe, happy and loved.

Because you deserve it all.

With Lots of Love,
R

Here’s my shout-out to everyone taking adulthood way too seriously.

Have you noticed how weirdly beautiful it is to be all of you at once? Like, the “I’ve got my life together” part and the “who left the glasses in the bathroom?” part; both valid. I mean all of them, the unapologetically me part, the cold and brutal one, the soft warm-hearted one, the impulsive one with intrusive thoughts, the goofy clumsy side, the nerdy weirdo, the careless troublemaker, the darker than night side, the one overwhelmed with empathy, the raw wild one, the bossy one with calm and love inside… yes, the one that carried mistakes, the one that forgave, the good, the not so good, everything...

I think the kindest thing we can do for ourselves (and for the people around us) is to get to know these parts, understand them a little better, and hold them a little tighter. If there’s any healing needed, let’s do it. If there’s anything or anyone to let go of, let’s do that too. And if all we need is a slow, mundane day to remember we’re okay, then let's just take it without feeling guilty or shame for resting or not being productive.

Maybe this is what adulting really is about. Being true to yourself, healing when needed, letting go when it’s time, and living a little instead of rushing through life... I hope we all get to find our lil peace and home!

So today, lemme tell you something…

I’ve always been a “brain over heart” kinda person. Logic, reason, overthinking at 2 AM; that’s my comfort zone. But after reading more and more about psychology, I honestly feel a little betrayed by my own mind.

I grew up in an era where unfinished stories, pain, and tragedies were romanticised and celebrated. I don’t even know how many movies and books I clung to, cried over, and then carried around in my head like emotional luggage. Some of them still haunt me, not in a horror way, but in a “why does this make me feel so much?” way.

Then I read about the Zeigarnik Effect.
Named after psychologist Bluma Zeigarnik, it basically says: our brains remember unfinished tasks and stories way more than completed ones.
Anything unfinished - Brain, "Let's keep it on loop :)". Anything finished - Brain, "Ugh fine, let's archive it and move on".
And something shifted. A part of me felt slightly conflicted.

So all those years of me thinking I was just “deep” and “sensitive” about tragic love stories… turns out, a big chunk of it was just my brain being dramatic about incomplete stuff.

How funny is it?
We play certain memories on loop, yearn for closure, grieve potentials that never even happened and sometimes, it’s just the brain playing its little tricks.
A part of me feels bad about it. Like, “Oh, so all that pain was partly a glitch?”

But another part feels even worse, because now I can’t even romanticise my own sadness guilt-free. Knowing the science behind it makes it harder to pretend it’s all just “poetic suffering”.
Maybe that’s the sign, though.
Maybe the point isn’t to stop feeling deeply, but to follow your heart a bit more consciously, even if your brain is screaming, “This is just an unfinished task, ma’am!”

I think somewhere I lost the dreamer in search of reality, the writer while looking for truth, the kid trying to "grow up." I haven't been writing lately. A relative's question reminded me someone still enjoyed reading, maybe secretly relating. I was glad to be asked; for a second I caught a glimpse of who I was. Next moment, it felt like an illusion, just simply mine.

Lately I've been reading a lot about Psychology, something I've always been intrigued by. Human minds! I try to understand, sometimes finding words that "make sense". I don't take any one idea completely; sometimes they're logical, sometimes just polished words from another person's world. Some arguments feel pointless; sometimes they make peace with me, and other times they don't make much noise at all, maybe cause of drained energy.

Yet the journey continues; different versions, illusions, stories, moments, memories. Not everything has to make sense. Sometimes what we feel deep inside is worth following, if we really trust it. The energy, the gut feeling, that quiet inner voice; call it what you will...

To my hoomans, ❤️

Chennai felt so scary at first. The decision to move there happened overnight, and I honestly had no idea what was waiting for me. But meeting you guys turned out to be one of the best things that happened.

I was lucky enough to meet and spend time with so many beautiful souls, and I'll always cherish those memories. I love you all.

Ps: So sorry that I don't have the pictures of all of you. I really wish I had clicked.

Coming to you both... it was crazy, chaotic, hilarious, unfiltered, and filled with so much love.

A part of me always held myself back from making friends or getting too close because of my past experiences. But somehow, you both made it impossible for me to stay in that shell. You made everything feel so effortless, so safe, and so real. I still have no idea how you managed to do that, but I'm incredibly grateful you did, and here I am talking about both of you out loud.

Yash, I know you don't really like posting pictures like this, so please bear with me. They're just too adorable not to share. Also, thank you for the pictures and say 'Hi' to Pattu.

Nargis, yes... I'm posting the picture you didn't really like because you look absolutely cute in it. And yes, that trip will definitely happen!

From our random supermarket visits and terrace breaks to the smallest meetups that somehow turned into the best memories... every moment was full of life, laughter, and happiness. I really wish I had clicked more pics, though.

I miss you both more than I can put into words.

Thank you for becoming such an important part of my life. I'm so grateful that life brought both of you my way. Love you guys to the core, and I can't wait to meet you guys again.

With lots of love & hugs,
R.
