Meeting Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia.

Just before our concert with Javid Afsari Raad and KORK (Norwegian Broadcasting Orchestra) this September, we learned that Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia was seated in the front row. It felt unreal — the Maestro we had heard of and listened to since childhood, the face of North Indian classical music, the doyen of raga and bansuri.
His presence filled me with humility.

Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia has actively contributed to shaping the raga music scene since the 1950s, working alongside legends like Pandit Ravi Shankar,Lata Mangeshkar,Ustad Zakir Hussain,George Harrison of the Beatles,John McLaughlin, Jan Garbarek - Norwegian saxophonist, Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma,contributing beautiful music to many films, and receiving the most prestigious honours in music.

After our set, we greeted Pandit ji. His words will stay with me forever — praise for our unique raga and tala,one of the most beautiful performances he had heard, encouragement to share what we’ve learned with the next generations, and a reminder to keep serving raga music with love.

Thank you Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia for the beautiful music and knowledge you have shared with everyone through your life. Thank you for supporting and encouraging us on our mission to serve music. It means the world!

Some blessings cannot be bought or forced. They are spiritual gifts, moments of pure abundance from the Almighty. This was one of those moments.

I express my deepest gratitude to my principal teacher, Ustad Harbhajan Singh Bansal, for his faith, dedication, and countless hours of guidance, and to my teacher, Ustad Fateh Ali Khan, as well as my mentors Harpreet Bansal and Sajjad Ali.

Khayal/Raga music isn’t just a genre. It’s a lifestyle, a philosophy — and I’m grateful to share its colours and joys with the world.

Raag Darbari - the raga of kings & the king of ragas. 👑🎶

Born in the royal courts of India🇮🇳 - Raag Darbari carries a depth and gravity unlike any other raga. Traditionally attributed to the legendary 16th century musician Miyan Tansen, its profound and majestic notes have echoed through centuries, carrying an emotion that words can hardly express. ❤️

Today, we humbly bring a glimpse of «Nain So Nain», a beautiful bandish composed by the legendary Ustad Fateh Ali Khan (1935-2017) from Patiala Gharana in Pakistan. 🇵🇰

A timeless piece of music that bridges generations, traditions, and borders. ❤️

I learnt this beautiful composition in Raga Bhimpalasi from Ustad Harbhajan Singh Bansal as a teenager.

Little did I imagine then that one day I would have the honour of singing it for the living legend, Abida Parveen jee.

My heartfelt thanks to Ustad Sarfraz Khan for making this beautiful evening possible.

Thank you, Abida jee, for your warm greetings and prayers for my beloved guru, Ustad Harbhajan Singh Bansal, whose music and teachings continue to live on through his students. 🙏

Tarana in Raga Yaman ✨
Humbled to share a glimpse from our recent performance in Copenhagen, singing a Drut (fast tempo) Tarana in Ek Taal (12 beats) in the serene, night-time Raga Yaman.

I am accompanied by the brilliant @imrankhantabla on tabla - an exceptional artist carrying forward the pure essence of the Delhi Gharana as the grandson of the legendary tabla wizard, Ustad Faiyaz Khan (1934-2014).

The Tarana is a majestic vocal form pioneered by the legendary Hazrat Amir Khusro (1253-1325), a half-Persian, half-Indian master musician and Sufi mystic who beautifully bridged cultures through his art.

While a Tarana sounds like a rhythmic dance of syllables - Odani, Tanaderena, Yalali - these words carry a deeply mystic, spiritual, and hidden meaning. They are a divine language designed to bypass the intellect and connect the soul directly to the infinite.

This specific Tarana is incredibly close to my heart. It was a sacred gift taught to me by the late maestro Ustad Fateh Ali Khan (1935–2017) of the Patiala Gharana. My journey to him was paved by my venerable teacher, Guru Harbhajan Singh Bansal (1941-2026), under whose guidance I studied Raga music in Norway for around 25 beautiful years.

When Guru Harbhajan Singh Bansal sent me to Ustad Fateh Ali Khan, it was a beautiful act of shared mentorship - a profound testament to the unity, love, and lifelong friendship between two absolute legends. Through me, their shared love for music transcended borders and boundaries.

Every note I sing is a celebration of that beautiful bond and the timeless lineage they entrusted to me.
