He began with stone.

Ceramics entered his practice almost by chance.
Over time, clay became something more than a material — it became a language.

From the physicality of stone carving to the possibilities of clay, Vipul Kumar’s practice has evolved through the years.

What does it take to develop a voice of your own?

For Vipul Kumar, perhaps it begins with listening.
Quietly observing. Thinking. Returning to the work. And ultimately finding his own way forward.

Before he became one of India's most important modern masters, Krishen Khanna was a banker. He worked at Grindlays Bank for 14 years, painting alongside his day job, until in 1961 he left banking to become a full-time artist.

A hundred years. One eye, always pointed at the people history skips past — grieving crowds, migrant workers, wedding bands, friends, and finally, one of the most popular images in Western art, reimagined with Indian farmers instead of apostles.

One man. One century. One movement.

Visit www.youtube.com/@reshmachordiaart for a closer look at Krishen Khanna’s works.

Krishen Khanna was seven years old when his father showed him a postcard of Da Vinci's Last Supper. It was an image that stayed and he kept revisiting it in his works time after time.

One image, chased across an entire lifetime.

Decades later, his version set his auction record.

Krishen Khanna is the last living link to the movement that built India's modern art market. His record is a fraction of this year's biggest sale.

What are we actually rewarding?

Before Raja Ravi Varma, the gods were symbols — distant, stylised, more idea than image. He gave them faces.

By fusing European academic oil-painting technique with Indian mythology, he turned abstract divinity into figures people could actually recognise — soft skin, flowing drapery, human expression, real weight and light.

Then he went further. In 1894, he set up India's first major lithographic press and started mass-printing his gods as affordable oleographs.

For the first time, sacred imagery wasn't locked inside temples or royal collections — it hung on the walls of ordinary homes across India.

Revered. Admired. Immortal.

One painting made history. But is it proof that Indian art is finally breaking through? Or is it proof of exactly how far there still is to go?

The artists working right now are still waiting in the shadows. The real question isn't the record — it's what we're doing for the ones still building their careers.

A significant percentage of everything traded in Indian art belongs to a handful of modern masters. The scarcity of supply sets the value and keeps pushing prices up.

The artists today can't compete on scarcity. And there's no real institutional infrastructure stepping in to champion their work instead.

The gap is real.

A price of $17.9M for a Raja Ravi Varma painting (Yashoda and Krishna) made headlines this year.

But that record is only half the story.

Visit www.youtube.com/@reshmachordiaart to see what the record sale tells us about the Indian art ecosystem.
