Some of us are adults who are still kids trying to be loved by the people who are suppose to love us first.

“Somebody You’re Suppose to Love” by @laurenspencersmith hits hard as a 30+ year old woman who still doesn’t understand why I’m still the little girl who just wanted her mom’s love. I hope I will find some healing by reading White Oleander since it is a book about a daughter and her mom’s relationship. I’ve been through a lot with her as a child and as an adult. At the end of the day, I have love for her and I’m trying to allow myself to be okay with rebuilding this relationship.

I wrote this poem before my Yiey (Grandma in Khmer) had passed away. When I was a kid we lived in a one car garage of my great aunt and uncle’s home. My grandma from my dad’s side and other relatives side lived in a studio just 20 feet across the way so I saw her everyday for almost the first 9 years of my life. Even when we had moved to a different town, she would stay with us for weeks and sometimes months at a time. I have so many memories with my Yiey such as having Bah Bor (rice porridge) with Trey Ngeat (dried Cambodian fish) all the time and picking apples together. She was one of the people who taught me how to say all the days of the week and count all the numbers in Khmer. I would teach her English words and she would teach me Khmer words. We spent so many late nights just having random conversations and I often helped her study for her US Citizenship test by quizzing her.

My yiey was a traditional Cambodian woman. She wore a sarong everyday, she believed in the power of tiger balm and back coin rubs when you’re sick, she tried to set me up with arrange marriages, she lit an incense stick on the offering stand and did a prayer every evening. There were some things I didn’t always agree with her about, but at the end of the day I loved my grandma for who she was.

In 2018, I had moved out of state so I didn’t see much of my grandma the first two years I was away. I last spent time with her in 2020. I sat in the couch and my grandma walked into the living room and sat next to me. It was clear she was developing dementia because sometimes she didn’t recognize me at all. Other moments, she remembered me as the little girl version of me. She would tell everyone how I was her little “Chauw-Srey” (granddaughter). Honestly, it made me happy that she recognized me even if in her mind I looked like a little kid instead of an adult. If all she could remember were only the days we spent when I was a kid, I was grateful even though it broke my heart. That was the last day I saw my yiey as she passed away from kidney failure 10 months later.

Everytime I light an incense stick, it is in her memory.

This past year has been filled with many losses and grief. Something that I’m still learning to process. I don’t think grief ever truly goes away once you’ve experienced it. It’s a terrible and beautiful thing because it’s a reminder we were lucky enough to have loved someone so much it hurts when their presence is no longer here. The best way I can hold onto that love for them is to bring them with me in every moment by showing up, moving forward, and living this life even when it’s tough.

I could have chosen to fall into my old ways which would have been to isolate myself and live in the darkness of my own thoughts. Instead of burying myself in that place, I’m learning to channel my emotions in a more healthy form which is working out and running. Taking all my emotions and transferring it through physical energy is so healing.

Thich Nhat Hanh is someone I’ve talked about before and I have a lot of his books that I have read since I was a teenager to my adulthood. He was a Buddhist monk, but he doesn’t tell people to convert to Buddhism. He shows the world you don’t need to be a Buddhist to follow the Buddhist values and mantras. You can be of any religion and still practice mindfulness and kindness in addition to your own beliefs.

There is one Buddhist parable from this book that I will never forget. It is about a man who leaves behind his pregnant wife to go to war. He returns home after 3 years and his son tells him he is not his father and how every night his mother cries and is comforted by his actual father. This story is short but so compelling and it’s hard for me to say why because it would spoil the story for you! Let me just tell you my jaw dropped at the ending. This is a story about pride and jealousy and the importance of communication and listening.

He lived a simple and meaningful life, spreading his message of Buddhism through his voice and his writing. He took social action during the Vietnam war by helping to rebuild villages and establish schools, as well as protesting for peace. The country exiled him for it, but he did not let that stop him from being kind.

Thank you to Kelsey from @bookpublicityservices for reaching out to me and sending me this physical ARC (Advance Reader Copy) of Elaine Hsieh Yu’s Book “Ugly Dumpling.” I am so excited to read this book and share my honest experience about it in the future ☺️

This book is a memoir of the author’s life growing up in poverty, moving from Hong Kong to America, and about her relationship with her mother who has mental health struggles. This is a coming of age story as well as a book that discusses three generations so we will also learn about how Elaine raised her own children. Knowing this little bit about the book already pulls on my heart because it sounds very similar to my own upbringing 💕

Crazy Rich Asians is the first book in a trilogy series by Singaporean-American-Chinese author Kevin Kwan. I picked up this book for $1.99 at the thrift store a long time ago. Some of you may have seen the movie or even heard about it. It’s rumored to become an HBO TV series with the original cast!

I enjoyed watching the movie as the cultural expectations and obligations reminds me so much of my own family who follow traditional Cambodian and Chinese ways. I was also so happy to see Asian representation on a bigger scale with some of my favorite Asian actors.

I loved this book so much more than the film version. I feel like we get a little more insight into the backstory of all the characters especially some of the ones who are not main characters.

The tough mother in this story reminds me a lot of my own.

Crazy Rich Asians follows an American Taiwanese professor, Rachel Chu. She travels to Singapore for the first time with her boyfriend Nick Young. She has been dating him for over a year and finds out his family doesn’t know about her and she also doesn’t know anything about them. When she finally meets Nick’s family she learns the cultures differences between American Chinese and “real” Chinese. This is definitely something many of diasporic Asians can relate to. This book shows you what it means to stay true to yourself even when others cast judgment on you. It’s about staying authentic even when others try to change you.

If you are interested in this book, I have it in my Amazon Storefront. You can find a direct link to this page in my Instagram bio. Please know as a small Amazon influencer, I may receive commission off qualifying purchases made from the links. This is a small way to help support my page 💕
