The story this film tells is one that is shrouded in darkness, hidden through the rain. My goal when shaping the colors was to envelop the audience in the cold, unforgiving world of the film, and I’m very excited to share the results. A special thank you goes to my good friend Ryan Poss for entrusting me with bringing his vision to life for this film!

SENSE OF SIGHT - Recent work for @burningstudio  This project was a very exciting one to bring to life through color. Isaac and his team did such an incredible job with building out the world that this story takes place within. The set design, cinematography, lighting, and acting all came together to create something profoundly beautiful, and I’m grateful to have played a piece in crafting the final look for this film.

PIANISSIMO - Recent work for @burningstudio  The message of this film is one of great weight and impact, I’m thankful for the opportunity to compliment the amazing cinematography by @isaac_latimer with the color for this film. Conveying deep emotional themes through color is an excellent way to immerse the audience deeper into a film, and I’m very happy with how this has turned out.

𝐖𝐀𝐓𝐂𝐇𝐄𝐃 𝐓𝐎𝐖𝐄𝐑 — Recent Work

Back in September I had the opportunity to be the DP for this film, and I jumped a the opportunity. Fire Towers have long been an interest of mine and making a movie in one has always struck me as an epic concept. This film fulfilled that desire and was a ton of fun to create. I’m very excited to share the results from it, I always love when I can get a full experience with both capturing and coloring the film.

Crafting the look of this film was an exciting endeavor. I myself am a big fan of the way classic films like ‘Clue’ look and feel. The core aspect of coloring this film was to finalize the visual narrative of the story, tastefully shaping the rendering of the rich colors and lighting that were captured on set into something that takes the audience on a journey with the characters. I wanted the warmth and softness of the environment to make a lasting impression on viewers, and thanks to the incredible work of the production crew that brought this film to life I can say with confidence that we crafted something truly special.

THE THRONE - Recent Personal Project

This past summer I had the opportunity to submit a film to a film challenge, but there was a catch: the film had to be shot on a phone. Having recently picked up an iPhone 16 Pro at the time, I thought it was the perfect opportunity to put it to the test. Thanks to my friend Ian taking up the role as my actor, we set out to make an adventure focused film following him as he takes his rocking chair into the mountains for a better view.

Filming with an iPhone presented many unique challenges, as the cameras don’t have ND filtration for proper motion blur, and for the most part lack depth of field. In order to get a beautiful image out of the camera, I made use of Apple Log through the Blackmagic Camera app, paired with a special ND filter attachment through my @tiltamax Kronos case. To solve the depth of field issue, I made use of DaVinci Resolve’s recently released Magic Mask 2 and Defocus Background OFX to create realistic depth of field.

In addition to those tools, I made use of lens distortion and very subtle tilt shift blur to add additional character into the frames, along with my film emulation process through a combination of tools from within DaVinci Resolve as well as @dehancer.film and @cullenkellycolor.

One other tool I played around with a bit was Nano by @greyscalelabsfx - I used it extremely subtly in just a few of the shots, but it is an incredible tool to add haze and additional depth into scenes. I hope to share some additional, more pronounced examples of it in action in some upcoming project showcases, and I do plan to create a dedicated review for it on my YouTube channel in the near future.

This film did go on to win the competition I created it for, and you can view it in full on my YouTube channel, as well as an in-depth editing breakdown. There also is a timeline showcase posted on this Instagram account.

The barrier of entry for filmmaking as far as cost is concerned is becoming lower and lower. There’s simply no excuse now to not get out and film with whatever camera you have, even if it’s just your phone!

THE POWER OF THE GAULEY

Recent work for @germanicreative // @new_and_gauley_river_adv

The Gauley River is a world-class whitewater rafting experience. In coloring this project, I developed a bright, punchy look that brings out the beauty of the natural landscape which rafters travel through, and also highlights the thrill of a whitewater rafting adventure. Since this film was targeted for an online release, I wanted to make sure it popped and grabbed the attention of viewers. The Gauley River has a deeply invested community surrounding it, and it was amazing to hear the positive reception following the film’s release. The whole process for this film was a ton of fun from start to end. I love projects like these where I can lean into the beauty of what is already present, and bring it to its full potential.

Tiffany & Nate - Recent Work for @germanicreative

Wedding films bring tons of potential for color grading, as no two weddings are the same. This wedding is definitely one of the most beautiful and unique I’ve had the opportunity to color. The wedding day itself was overcast and rainy, creating a beautiful soft light in all of the scenes. The color palette of the couple’s flowers and decor paired beautifully with it, resulting in a deep and rich range of colors to work with in post. I put these colors through @dehancer.film’s FujiFilm 3513 Film Print, taking advantage of the print’s richness and tonality to complement the existing colors of the image.

One tool that I obtained for this project that helped take the look to another level is Nano by @greyscalelabsfx, which is a full digital diffusion plugin that enabled me to add haze and extra depth to select shots. Since the lighting was already overcast, this tool enhanced that, contributing heavily to the dreamy feeling of this wedding. I did use the tool on a few indoor shots as well, to add light rays and introduce haze. I’m extremely impressed with this tool and can’t wait to use it more on upcoming projects.

Ian & Makayla - Recent Color Work for @germanicreative

Wedding films are always a unique opportunity to tell a story through color. This wedding was a spectacular example of it, and I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity to bring these memories to life through the art of color. Ian is a fellow filmmaker and close friend of mine, and he wanted a special look that fitted their wedding; bringing to life the colors, the venue, the whole presence for the day. The look I developed features rich, deep colors, and a tasteful shift to cooler tones in the shadows to bring out the desired mood, as well as contrast from the stunning decor in the frame.

Upon sharing the film with them, I was so grateful to hear that they loved it, and that it all looked perfect, bringing back those beautiful memories from their day. As a film colorist, that is the best thing I can hear from someone viewing my work. Color Grading isn’t just supposed to look pretty, it’s supposed to tell a story, give meaning, and enhance what is already there. I know this day was so very special for Ian and Makayla, and I’m grateful to have played a role in preserving the memories of their special day for the years to come.

The Ultimate Color Grading Experience - DaVinci Resolve Advanced Panel II

Special thanks to @5ketchy_ for filming!

There’s something magical about using this panel for grading. Virtually every function in the color tab has an associated button. The learning curve is step, but once muscle memory starts to kick in, you’re able to color a project with unmatched speed and accuracy. The panel essentially becomes an extension of your hands. There’s a reason Hollywood colorists swear by this setup, nothing comes close to what it offers. When paired with calibrated reference monitors and a 7.1 surround sound system, color grading turns into a movie of its own. I’m super excited and grateful to have the opportunity to learn this panel, and I can’t wait to share more soon in regard to it!

THE THRONE - EDITING BREAKDOWN

This film is something I was very excited to bring together. From Editing to Sound Design and then onwards to VFX and Color, I was genuinely surprised at each step along the way as to how it was turning out.
