not gonna lie aug has been a slumpy month much of it i was retreating into the dark depths of my mental man cave (one of those complicated things that’s both good and bad for u at once—detoxed from outside noise then poisoned myself with a big dose of my self lol) but just wanted to publicly thank everyone for continuing to reach out to me everything is a cycle and the sun will shine🌞 trying to be someone that my 20 year old self would think is cool. it’s very easy to be a critic. powerful are those smart enough to become stupid enough to envision joy. if being a child at heart means that people belittle me, i think i’ve decided that is ok… i will make the sacrifice… the people i respect like me well enough, and i hope to be remembered for my sensitivity and curiosity and not my savvy… to be sheltered is a blessing and i should stop being ashamed of my thin skin… art and music and human interactions are just so much better when there are no cameras around. (i say as i post pics) i’m so thankful to be surrounded by inspiring creative good-hearted people that want the best for me and i’m so grateful to have a safe place to sleep every night!!! 🪼✨🪼✨🪼
everyone that is tagged i was happy to see u & wanted to commemorate it in this post! hope it’s not creepy! by @respectfully

*still catching up on all the messages i missed this past week while sick, please forgive me for gratuitously posting before replying to everyone & thanks for all the well wishes (it was just the flu don’t worry)

idk where i was when every other teenager in america was reading this, but i’m going on 13 rn so this fit right into my re-teen summer theme of refusing to grow old by trying to relive my youth. i knocked this out in one night, can you believe? a book’s gonna take me 3 years or 3 hours, i can’t control the in between. i was so hooked i even brought it into the shower with me. i have a shower with two wall hooks at two different heights, so if i put the showerhead on the lower one, the book stays above the water. moment i did that all the memories got unlocked. oh god, the nostalgia of pre-iphone life. i forgot how i used to read in the shower all the time as a kid, when the internet was still chained to the wall downstairs, i would put books inside those plastic pocket files for binders, you know those? and take it in the shower with me, but then inevitably i’d face the conundrum of having to turn the page, so i’d have to dry my hands and the plastic and turn the page outside of the shower and put it back in the plastic, and it wasn’t very effective, but i somehow felt as if having a book in a wet environment was a sort of illegal and forbidden thing, so it felt exciting and fun conceptually even though the process was tedious and the entire reading experience was distracted.

anyway, as i was reading this in the shower, i had a strange out of body moment imagining myself as a thirteen year old being forced to read this by a thirty year old, and then realizing i was older than the teacher figure in my head. “here’s a good book for the kids,” i heard the adults say, “show em they’re not alone.“ vom. i’m sure salinger didn’t write this to peddle corny morals to children in literature class, but it’s hard to approach with an open heart knowing it’s been co-opted by the authorities. what a nightmare to be reduced to an english lesson, dissected into bland chicken bits and washed out with puberty. JD, don’t worry, this post-teen sees you! by @respectfully

july 2026 (abridged)

the girls wanted to do fireworks on the beach but i had emails to send, and i was tired. we exchanged IGs before we parted. the damp blanket of warm purple sunset fluttered around our bare legs and onto the rocky concrete. then the slap of white iPhone©️ light. struck into my salty eyelashes. blurry silver needles all around. our blue follow buttons sunk into gray, one after another, 🟦⬜️🟦⬜️, like pressing into wet sand, satisfying, off balance, slightly unnerving, the scenic ocean bay in the window that on the morning stroll gets dotted with pale lifeless squid and eyeless fish. i saw in succession flashes of myself through their eyes and it struck me that i was with people outside of the industry, outside of the city for the first time in a long time. ew, what a tacky thought, but ‘what would they think of me?’ i wondered, and shrunk, withering under the fearsome potential of an eighteen year old more than i had ever withered under the arrogant eye of any ceo or millionaire. the terror of youth! we said good bye and i walked away, through the cobwebs of that light sticky on my eyelashes, back into the damp purple sky, where no one knew who i was, and all that could speak for me was the sad flat sculpture i’d built of myself, newly saddled with the embarrassment of my restraint, blazing nothing for the generations to come. “people don’t need to know all that about you, though.” i do want people to know about me, though. am i too lowkey? perfection is not erotic, but neither is sharing. we’re made too much of privacy, mystery, anticipation, and desire. you want to connect without sharing, beloved without fame. i’ve had a fever for 8 days now which has made me loony enuf 2 journal in public (o no not again!) felt like i didn’t do anything last month and yet i have 3,000 photos. i should probably do more posts about work. on to august! by @respectfully

some content for the online resume since i’ve finally made peace with the fact that being a social media anti has done nothing to stop me from being addicted to it so i might as well use the inescapable surveillance state to my business advantage— hi various governments watchlists and friends, here is a peek into one of the several things i do as it’s easier to show than explain my niche art girl job, one of the things which i make money from is my ability to hold multiple ceramics one after another without breaking them. it’s my best party trick. i am also an artist liaison which means i know how to send emails that don’t piss people off (too much). sounds simple enough but you would not believe how small the venn diagram overlap is for these two skills.

my schedule is pretty packed for the next few months, but please do keep me in mind for any future jobs that you think we could work together on!

anyway, enough of me plugging myself, a zine of this installation just came out on @tomsachs webshop. limited 100. thanks to all involved. grab one now.

i didn’t receive clearance on this clip so if any featured parties would like it taken down pls dm me and i will do so 💓 by @respectfully

what makes a book good? i mostly read classics or award winners because i don’t want to take a risk on something that might be mediocre. the side effect of this is that i often enter a book knowing that it has been defined as “good writing” and my job as the reader is to understand why, which is a completely different experience than evaluating something from scratch— one uses the past and present as a frame of reference, and the other invokes a supernatural sensitivity to good aesthetic mutation, an ability to see a future with different rules and values.

anyways, i was a bit taken aback because i wrote stuff like this in my teens and early twenties when i was desperately clawing my way through the tunnel of absurdism, so it gives me a sort of secondhand embarrassment. it sounds like a little girl’s journal. apparently it’s “good” though. when i imagine a grown man with a handlebar mustache typewriting this on loose leaf paper in a dusty carpeted room with yellow lamps and a big rotary phone that trills like a fire alarm, it becomes a bit more palatable. maybe i was once a grown man with a handlebar mustache in a teenage girl’s body, or maybe there was a teenage girl in richard brautigan’s body. maybe we both felt the same things despite our physical and cultural and generational differences and this book is an incarnation of the both of us at certain points in our lives, connected across time. all that “bad writing” i did might have been good, or maybe this “good writing” is as bad as my secondhand embarrassment implies… maybe he killed himself because he couldn’t graduate from the earnestness, maybe i’m alive because i can’t write like this anymore. “As an editor I was always waiting for Richard to grow up as a writer. It seems to me he was essentially a naïf,” says his editor.

i waited a full day before giving in and going online to search reviews and interpretations. what did it all mean? the talking tigers and the Forgotten Works and the evil drunkards committing group suicide? imagine my surprise when there was no sparknotes symbolism explainer. it is what it is, and it reminds me of childhood and watercolor pictures. by @respectfully

i’ll never forget the first time i visited hong kong. there’s a locked entry in my now defunct blog that i wrote in between a whirlwind of airports trains cabs emails texts and excel sheets in what was probably some sort of delirious sleep-deprived fever, one of the few records from the fugue of my twenties. i read back on that entry from time to time. it’s very short, simple, a few lines with a few blurry photos of sidewalks and cigarette butts, and i catch myself thinking affectionate archetypal thoughts about my younger self— “everything feels intense when you’re young, honey”— but first times get less embarrassing with age, because you long to feel again, and the awe i felt my first time in hk is something i’ve been returning to— the dirty corners and abrasive intimacy that remind me of the feeling of goopy body glitter, a flap inside a picture book, an emergency slide. a fantastical dance of function and non-function. the city is a reminder that mystery and uninhibited practicality are necessary for providing us our daily microdoses of delight.

i can’t say i know hk very well, or even at all; it’s a land of projected romanticism for me, probably just like what tokyo is for a lot of people, an exotic code that’s just strange enough to tickle. the point is that i love photos of hong kong and i’ll always stop to flip thru a hk photobook. to think it was originally just a tiny fishing village!

ps. i will continue to proudly and unabashedly emdash with such singular flair that no one shall ever dare accuse me of sounding like chatgpt— i refuse to surrender what is rightfully mine! by @respectfully

i touch this book at least once a week. sometimes i just squeak my oily finger on the shiny cover, sometimes i just look at the pictures, like a 3 year old. the grainy xerox effect reminds me of before the internet, when books were mystical. i heard of this girl who started making iphone-shaped glass rectangles, and they went viral and sold out. whatever you touch will absorb your soul and your soul will absorb. i just realized that recently. we must first touch the things we want to know. skin not brain is the portal to knowledge 𖣐

about the book:

bruno munari was an italian thinker. he was a futurist who became an ex futurist who didn’t give a fuck about his autobiography, which actually makes him the most futurist of all the Futurists.

first published in 1977, this book is a pragmatic and useful manual to fantasy. methods for imparting creativity are delivered via step by step instructions amidst a dreamlike procession of related but unexpected reference images. the book is written somewhat bizarrely, by today’s narrow publishing standards, at least— it comes across as a disorganized, inconclusive draft that ends unfinished. as jeffrey schnapp notes, the last line is: “more than a million different combinations are possible.” by @respectfully

i’ve forgotten how i sound when i type lol but here’s a few thoughts:

1) embarrassingly enough it was an ig post that changed my brain chemistry, a trendy graphic prompt from some creative director in NY: “nowadays we all just skim. go deep instead. try out raf simons’ 3 re- rule: RE-WATCH RE-READ RE-LISTEN.” i kept thinking about it for 3-4 weeks. mustn’t everything first be consumed for enlightenment to be achieved? there is no time for raf’s three “re-”s. the old must make room for the new. or was i wrong to think that familiarity signals unimportance, submission to comfort, acknowledgment of the inferior past self, death, & defeat? can one who has not conquered the world return home with dignity?

2) dec 2019: i was looping exo thru my neckband earphones when i stepped out of the elevator. 7F. the crowd was full of intimidatingly cool tokyo kids i didn’t know. the photographs disappeared in the din but i sent virgil an overly enthusiastic message of congratulations anyway. i was just happy to be included and happy that he noticed me, because he was an important person, according to lots of other people, and that meant i must have value, too, by proxy.

3) i pulled out a bunch of old zines and catalogs from my bookshelf. my fingers, unavoidably, brushed against their covers, and we made eye contact, awkwardly. we hadn’t seen each other properly in years. also, i thought they were boring when we first met, so i mostly ignored them. photobooks are like loose skin with no meat, or a limp dress with no body to fill it. i used to find them irritating because they seemed, visually, as if they would promise pleasure, but, having no depth, always underdelivered. one has to make peace with this and embrace the uncomfortable sensuality of the hollow printed image, which was made to be spread open, held down, and touched. i pushed my fingers into their spines and caressed their inky innards. i always wanted to be one of those hyperactive creatives who gets excited by photobooks. they seem so joyful about life, about collage moodboards and references and the great pyramids of knowledge that crush us. maybe i’m getting close? maybe i’m finally… coming of age? 🥁 by @respectfully

VT100 ASCII art courtesy @adrians.digital.basement. the full cut on youtube is of him repairing the computer itself before ending with this ascii finale and it’s become my fav new comfort video. i can watch these ascii things over and over and still find them just as charming and delightful as the first time. imagine how enchanting it must look on the real screen🌌 i may be the most tech illiterate tech fan on this side of the earth and i have no intention of changing that. i enjoy oohing and aahing in ignorant awe!

the VT100 was released in 1978 by the now defunct DEC and was such a market success that it set the standard for many features that we still use today. they were the first to implement smooth scroll (versus jumping lines). innovation!

this month (!) i have finally learned to accept the concept of image gathering / moodboards / collage as research. who knows how many i’ve made for other people. i think i thought i was too good for them. maybe i was also scared of what would be reflected back at me (confirmation of my existence). but if true enlightenment means having no reflections in the material world… maybe i’m finally giving in to being human…? late to the party but better late than never! by @respectfully

i’m 33! thank you for the opportunity i am dumber than i’ve ever been before and disappointed in myself for being uncool (=scared of conflict, scared to express myself, scared to take risks, scared of burnout, scared of being relevant, scared of being irrelevant) we always want what we don’t got ay but this year is the year im gonna become a Cool Girl. !!!! and get my drivers license! 2026 is my teenage revival! i’m fighting hard not to lose myself to the validation money machine and this stupid fucking black box we’re gonna make shitty crafts and enjoy things in ignorant bliss instead of cynically analyzing everything in sight. i’m not depressed but i’m still healing from depression from years and years ago and i’m so ashamed to admit that all the art i’ve been so privileged to see and help create over the past almost-decade could not touch my dry stone soul. but i’ve come very close to feeling again that little spark of joy and it’s a selfish, invisible accomplishment that i feel really horrible about but i would like to continue pursuing it anyway because i suppose that’s what the healed state is and what is the experience of life but your own consciousness. you are who you are everyday. life is too short to lie to yourself but the greater danger is forgetting how to be honest with yourself! i am relearning how to listen to my heart’s bells. onward and upward 🌌 above please find some Self Portraits inspired by one of my original myspace profile pics which i edited manually to be blurry and teal bc filters didn’t exist yet and it also had naruto theme song lyrics photoshopped on to it. i sadly no longer have it bc my dad threw away the hard drive on which i had meticulously archived every detail of my 2000s internet life (one of the most traumatizing events of my life) but now here it continues to live on in spirit. by @respectfully
