The ultimate 1976 vintage computing flex! Let's begin loading the game "Asteroid" by Stan Ockers from the 1977 book "The First Book of KIM" via real open-reel tape (Sanyo MR-701) into an incredibly accurate MOS KIM-1 replica.
This gorgeous build is based on Eduardo Casino's open-hardware Rev D PCB layout, utilizing his specialized dual 6530-to-6532 RRIOT replacement daughterboard.

An interesting detail is the sound produced during loading: it was FSK (Frequency Shift Keying).
The KIM-1 generated actual sine waves; a "0" bit consisted of 6 pulses at approximately 2400 Hz, while a "1" bit was formed by 9 pulses at approximately 3600 Hz.
Reception was handled by a specialized chip, the LM565 Phase-Locked Loop (PLL), which determined the incoming frequency and translated it into bits; this differed significantly from the Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) used by later computers.

Pure MOS 6502 assembly code running at 1MHz, displaying via 7-segment LEDs.

In these final days of summer, I spent a Sunday that was a bit different from the usual: I stepped out of my lab/gaming room and headed to the seaside along the Venetian coast. 🌊

It’s #amigasunday, hosted by @garygillgaming, so today is all about relaxation, some great reading on the Amiga and its history, and maybe, reflecting on what I’m doing and where this passion for retrogaming is taking me.

𝐁𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐯𝐚 𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐥𝐚 𝐓𝐕 𝐢𝐧 𝐬𝐨𝐭𝐭𝐨 𝐩𝐞𝐫 𝐬𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐧𝐞𝐥 𝐟𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐨

Se eri un ragazzino in quel decennio, c’era un sogno preciso che illuminava il vetro di questo schermo durante i break pubblicitari: 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐨𝐝𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝟔𝟒.

Gli spot dell'epoca non ti vendevano un semplice elettrodomestico, ma una rivoluzione.

Erano capolavori narrativi, strutturati per fare una magia: rassicurare 𝐢 𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐢 𝐞 𝐟𝐚𝐫 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐳𝐳𝐢𝐫𝐞 𝐢 𝐟𝐢𝐠𝐥𝐢.

La voce calda del narratore parlava di "studio", "produttività" e "lavoro", mostrava grafici colorati e magari quel magico slogan: «Punti un dito e scrivi, punti un dito e archivi».

Sembrava il passaporto per il domani.

Ma per i ragazzuoli, quel domani significava solo una cosa: 𝐠𝐢𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞.

Mentre lo schermo prometteva che avremmo gestito il budget familiare, loro sognavano solo pixel, occasionalmente gli infiniti minuti d'attesa delle cassette comprate in edicola, o il lusso di quei fantastici floppy disk da 𝟏𝟕𝟎 𝐤𝐢𝐥𝐨𝐛𝐲𝐭𝐞𝐬 con i giochi più incredibili del periodo.

Oggi quel futuro è diventato il nostro passato.

Ma accendere questa vecchia TV, sintonizzarla nello spazio tempo di quei colori accesi e di quei canali mediaset ci fa tornare esattamente là.

𝐀𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 #weekofc64 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐚𝐧 𝐞𝐧𝐝, I can't conclude it in a better way than by bringing one of my favorite games for this great machine!

Released in 𝟏𝟗𝟖𝟕 by 𝐀𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧, this iconic 𝐖𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐁𝐨𝐲 port brought the vibrant arcade magic straight into our living rooms! ✨
The C64 version delivered incredibly 𝐚𝐝𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 side-scrolling platform action.
To survive the dangerous tropical islands, you had to constantly collect fruit to keep your vitality bar full, dodge deadly rocks, jump over campfires, and 𝐬𝐤𝐚𝐭𝐞 your way through obstacles with your trusty skateboard! 🛹🍍
With its catchy chiptune soundtrack and challenging levels, it remains an absolute 𝐦𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐩𝐢𝐞𝐜𝐞 of the 8-bit era and a pure dose of retro nostalgia.

It's the last day of #WeekOfC64 by guild master @my.retro.tech.
So, for my last post, I’ve chosen a game that holds a special place in my heart.
It’s The Bard’s Tale,released in 1985, developed by Interplay, and published by Electronic Arts.
As a huge RPG fan and D&D player, I found it absolutely amazing when it first came out.
I’d also like to dedicate this post to #Retroboxart by @toysgonewild_uk because the box art really deserves it.

It's Day 6 of #WeekOfC64 hosted by @my.retro.tech.
And today I’d like to show you a rather unique accessory for the C64. It’s a 1520 plotter.
Here you see it printing an image created by Paul Rickards, originally published on the Biosrhythm website.
It used four mini ballpoint pens (black, blue, green, and red) to print charts and drawings on rolls of paper.
The four-pen printing mechanism was produced by Alps.
It seems to have done its job, it still works!😃

It’s Day 5 of #WeekOfC64 by @my.retro.tech, and today I’ve chosen a game from the C64’s early days: Omega Race
A very good and faithful port of the famous vector-graphics arcade game by Bally Midway released in 1982.
It was really fun back in the day, and in the arcade it was played using paddles,a feature that was carried over to the home version as well.

It’s Day 4 of #WeekOfC64, hosted by @my.retro.tech, and this time I’m bringing out GEOS for the C64.
What is GEOS? It was a truly revolutionary icon-based operating system for the C64!
I'm also using it here with the mouse designed for the C64.
Did you know that, for a time in the 80s, it was the third most widely used system?
Many students and professionals used it, and it fit into just 64KB of memory!

Today I took some time to perform maintenance on a few computers and seized the opportunity to bring out a C64 model you don't see very often.
It’s a Commodore C64G, and it rightfully fits into Day 3 of #WeekOfC64 by @my.retro.tech!
A very later model in the family, it’s unique because, as you can see, it features a light-colored "breadbin" style case, C64C style keys, and a very compact cost-reduction motherboard.

It’s Day 2 of the #weekofc64 hosted by @my.retro.tech
This time I’ve pulled out my "dark" setup featuring a custom black C64C and the 1986 classic Ghosts 'n Goblins.
It’s a game thats needs not much introduction, boasting great graphics and sound.
A homebrew version of the title was also released back in 2015, featuring improvements in several areas.

It’s a shiny day, and I’m READY.🟪 to join the #weekofc64 by @my.retro.tech.
Revisiting one of my vintage setups, brings back memories of typing out code listings on our beloved C64s.
There was no internet or smartphones; instead, we avidly read the manual and early guides to BASIC.
I remember the hot-air balloon across the screen, the PETSCII characters, tapes and disks. We were pioneers of a world that would evolve into what it is today, part of our daily life..
