Orchestra Now: TŌN on nor'easter Sun, Sep 27, 2026 with conductor Zachary Schwartzman performed 4 symphonic tales of love & death. 3 tales of doomed love from Verdi’s opera La Forza del Destino, Wagner’s opera Tristan und Isolde, & Tchaikovsky’s symphonic poem Francesca da Rimini alongside Mahler’s Funeral Rite, the first movement of his Second Symphony in which a man in his grave questions his life & what lies ahead.

Teatro Sociale in Como Italy.

"The Social Theater of Como has been setting the stage for culture since 1813. They picked the site of the ruined medieval Round Tower, handed the project to architect Giuseppe Cusi, and-there you go-a neoclassical gem rose & Como had its new cultural centerpiece.

By 1854, new boxes were squeezed in, bringing the count to 98, though even that wasn’t enough. By the early 1900s, the audience had outgrown the house again, a testament to Como’s appetite for art. The theater never lost its pull: Paganini electrified audiences here with his violin skills in 1823, Liszt piano dazzled in 1837.

Step inside: a cello-shaped auditorium dressed in red velvet, a ceiling adorned with muses descending from Olympus, & a stage curtain showing the fiery death of Pliny the Elder - only for him to get brought back to life on the nearby cathedral.

Today, the theater keeps its double life: heritage on the outside, living art on the inside. Its program swings from opera & classical concerts to contemporary dance & family shows, & every July the Como City of Music Festival takes over the streets, turning the whole town into a stage.

The Italian label, which reads "...Questo vermouth e stato fatto solo con vini de prima qualita e erbe scelte nella tradizione della formula originale di…"
ends with the signature of one Mr. Tribuno. It pretty much says that the vermouth is made of first quality wine (most vermouths aren’t) & herbs selected in the tradition of the original formula of this Tribuno guy. taken in Wine Time by @retroprods

I have appreciated these images of cows on the furniture. My recent read of Musical Tables poems featured 'Moo-ving In' but only identifies Dana Leigh Blanchette as 'book designer' which is not right. Thankfully the book credits it's jacket painting to Ethan Harper who it turns out has a series going on with these fun paintings. 🥰 taken in BOOK COVER by @retroprods

Parco Crani was the early morning highlight. Just wish I had been prepared with the swimwear under-dressing I had worn the day before on Lk Como that did not provide the swimming op. that Lugano offered. taken in Lugano, Switzerland by @retroprods

Pics from the elegant, 4-star 'Splendid' located along the pristine Lake Maggiore in Baveno, Italy & where I was finally able to SWIM! (Went down the ladder on left of center floating dock & swam around the front & back. Didn't really deal with the rocky access from shoreline.) Also appreciated the beautiful small pool - but it's shallow nature didn't qualify as 'a swim.'

Earlier that day we have been on Isola Bella & we realized that we would be back in Manhattan the next day. 😢 taken in Zacchera Hotels, Baveno, Italy by @retroprods
