An upholstery strategy to ensure your rooms don’t look like whatever the algorithm is serving up this week...

One of the easiest ways to create an authentic and truly collected room is to start with a single new upholstery piece and then build a room of vintage textiles and antique furnishings around it.

So what does this look like in practice? Instead of replacing everything at once, choose one new piece to invest in. That could be a sofa, a chair, or maybe it’s new drapery. Think of this piece as your trailhead as you start the journey of building a room. This piece sets the tone and direction your room will take. Then let older pieces you find along the way do more of the storytelling. This approach encourages slower decision-making and ensures a room develops a sense of time. That it feels assembled over years rather than ordered last week.

For this listening room, @schumacher1889 Arbor Vine was the new drapery investment and trailhead, mixing blue, brown, and yellow with green. We weren’t sure what we would find in shops, whether this room would take on more of a blue direction or green, but here we are in a forest of celadon and sage because that happened to be how we found all these chairs upholstered.

This approach makes for much more exciting work, too. Instead of sitting behind a computer screen and clicking add-to-cart on your behalf, I get to be sleuthing around shops, supporting other small businesses, and listening and learning from some of my favorite dealers.

Shops tagged here where we found each piece.

Big news. Big, beautiful news.

This home, years in the making, is officially part of the House Beautiful archive, and I’m deeply grateful to see it out in the world and to be able to share it with you this month. What you’re seeing is the result of more than two years of collecting. We layered this home with antique and vintage pieces, found objects with patina, original upholsteries mixed with new drapery work, preserved architectural details, and art sourced locally with intention.

This project would not exist without extraordinary collaborators who brought it to life. Endless thanks to Justin Elbert of CJE Construction @justinrelbert , Dana Parker-Gilbert and @simplycharminginteriors workrooms where hands shaped every upholstery and drapery detail. Thank you to @rettpeek , @margaret_zainey_roux , and @alongobucco who translated these rooms with such care; and to the team @housebeautiful , thank you for recognizing the value in this work.

Giant hug to @carolinepinkstonpr and team for placing this project and finding it a wonderful publication home.

Most of all, thank you to our clients– art collectors who trusted my process, leaned into color, and said yes to old things with stories. The result: rooms of remark fully realized.

Link in bio and stories. And don’t you worry. I’ll be posting about this one for a while.

the merriman in my hometown of wynne, arkansas, was the brainchild of my childhood best friend @jackson.becca and her husband @neallclarkjackson

the goal was to give a very storied family building a new life - for events and celebrations

my part in this very warm story was trying to leave well enough alone 🫣

it turns out that one-hundred years - forty of which might count as neglect - does wonders making rich and beautiful surfaces

these are the auxiliary rooms where bridal showers and baby showers and birthday parties and club meetings happen - upstairs from the main event spaces

photographs of lots of little details for you to explore by fellow arkansan @rettpeek
