The breakthrough sale was never about the new closing line. It wasn’t the buzzword. It wasn’t some secret phrase you picked up at training.

It was the moment you actually believed you could do it.

Every door-to-door rep goes through five stages. Most don’t make it past stage three.

Stage one: uninformed optimism. “This is gonna be easy. Who doesn’t want to save money on their power bill?”

Stage two: informed pessimism. You’ve knocked. You’ve been cussed at. You’re convinced these people want you dead.

Stage three: The valley. The breaking point. You either quit and chase a new shiny opportunity — where you’ll run the same three stages again, by the way — or you push through.

Stage four: Informed optimism. You’ve seen the worst of it. You know your numbers. You know what it takes. And now you actually believe it because you’ve earned the right to.

Stage five is success and fulfillment. Almost nobody gets there. The ones who do don’t think they’re already there — that’s exactly why they keep climbing.

If you’re stuck in the valley right now and it feels like hell, good. That means you’re actually in it.
