I want to share my story and spread awareness for ALD. ALD is a rare genetic condition caused by mutations in the gene that prevents the body from breaking down very-long-chain fatty acids. As a result they build up in the brain, nervous system, and adrenal glands, and destroy the protective myelin around the brain’s nerve cells. In September 2023, 4-year-old Khymir became the first patient at CHOP to receive gene therapy for CALD. We spent about a month in the hospital. For the treatment, his stem cells were taken out of his body, treated with the healthy gene he needed, and then reinfused back into his body. Khymir made a full recovery from his transplant and we’ve been monitoring closely. Unfortunately we are starting to see progression in his disease again now in 2025. We won’t stop fighting. There isn’t much African American involvement when it comes to being donors . Khymir and many other children have to found a bone marrow transplant match due to this lack of involvement.
