Presented by Vashon Film Institute: The Seed Queen and The Apple Path

Tuesday May 5th 7:30pm - at Vashon Theater

Through community engagement fueled by the memories of seeds collected, counted and shared on the kitchen tables of our ancestors, farmers and gardeners find ways to plant and tend the seeds of our future.

This buzz of resistance has been happening on Vashon, a conversation between Vivien Sansour, founder of the Palestinian Heirloom Seed Library and Jen Williams of Wild Dreams Farm & Seed. Jen has been growing Palestinian Heirloom varieties on her Farm for the past three seasons and is now one of many farms dedicated to growing seed for PHSL. We've been excited about the possibility of bringing this film to Vashon to share with you, and after much work to find all the permissions needed we will be sharing this story with you next week!

The Seed Queen of Palestine and PHSL's current project The Apple Path will show at the Vashon Theater Tuesday May 5th 2026 at 7:30pm a discussion led by Jen Williams will follow the films, giving us a chance to hear the story of how these connections were made and how they continue to be tended.

From the director, Miriam Shahin, The Seed Queen, 2018, documents the work of Vivien Sansour, founder of the Palestinian Heirloom Seed Library (2014). Inspired by the memories of her grandmother and the delicious food of her childhood, Vivien is dedicated to reintroducing long forgotten foods of her Homeland across the West Bank and the Palestinian diaspora. She sets up a mobile kitchen and travels through the region, stopping from town to town with her seeds and produce, reminding Palestinians of the power of the foods of their homelands and seed saving, thus sustaining their connection to the land and a people for many generations to come.

The Apple Path, documents the efforts to plant fruit bearing heirloom trees in Palestine. This began in 2020 with 1,000 trees planted. The goal for 2026 is to plant 2,000 more trees.. cont in comments: by @rewildinglove

UPDATE to tomorrow 's Program:

We are excited to confirm the program for Saturday's event and look forward to seeing you there.

In addition to our two speakers who will recount their experience participating in the olive harvest in the West Bank, Palestine, we are honored to welcome Dr. William Slaughter M.D, M.A. . Dr. Bill is a trustee of the US-Gaza Mental Heath Foundation, and is a clinical instructor in Psychiatry at Harvard University. Dr. Bill will share details of his work in mentoring mental health workers throughout the Palestinian diaspora, including Gaza, Jordan and Lebanon.

If time allows, Vashon for Palestine members will share experiences from volunteering in Hebron and participating in delegations to Palestine.

Finally we will close by announcing a travel scholarship for first time travelers to Palestine.

This will be a very full program so please plan on arriving promptly for a 2:30 pm start time. we look forward to seeing you tomorrow!

Thinking of all the families, the children, who have lost loved ones through ice's violent raids. I feel it's important to honor all- equally- and let the lives lost be the fuel to activate our actions. I did not know Renee Good, but I imagine she would not want to be singled out like she has been.
May they all rest in power!
