Here’s to a new year that doesn’t come with a map.

May its uncertainties sharpen our curiosity, deepen our courage, and lead us to places we never planned...,

but are glad we reached.

We are living in a culture entirely hypnotized by the illusion of time, in which the so-called present moment is felt as nothing but an infinitesimal hairline between an all-powerfully causative past and an absorbingly important future. We have no present. Our consciousness is almost completely preoccupied with memory and expectation. We do not realize that there never was, is, nor will be any other experience than present experience. We are therefore out of touch with reality. We confuse the world as talked about, described, and measured with the world that actually is. We are sick with a fascination for the useful tools of names and numbers—of symbols, signs, conceptions, and ideas.

Annual Ganesh Fair, Sawai Madhopur

Today was the first time I attended the Ganesh Fair, despite knowing about it since 2015. The crowd this year was said to be only about 20% of what it used to be, a sharp decline blamed on the heavy rains and floods around Sawai Madhopur. Some even speculate that the recent tiger-related mishaps within the fort premises have also kept people away.

Walking into the fair brought back memories of childhood. I distinctly recall being at an AWWA (Army Wives Welfare Association) meet once, where I saw their tagline: “Asha, Vishwas, Astha.” Back then, as a second grader, I couldn’t understand why they wrote the same thing in three ways. Only now, years later, I realise the depth of those words.

Human beings need a driving force to carry them through this uncertain and often harsh world. For most, that force is Astha (faith). Faith creates Asha (hope), and hope strengthens Vishwas (belief), that someone, or something, greater is watching over us. This cycle gives society a sense of direction, reassurance, and community.

Personally, I remain skeptical about gods in the conventional sense. Yet, I cannot deny that rituals, traditions, and collective practices like the Ganesh Fair play a role in knitting people together. They offer not just devotion, but also a pause from daily struggles, a chance to reflect, and an opportunity to feel part of something bigger than oneself.

Maybe we don’t need gods as much as we need the values that these rituals remind us of: resilience, unity, and shared responsibility. If practiced with sincerity, they can help us rebuild society, restore bonds, and perhaps even halt the ongoing degradation we see all around us.
