Today marks my transition into a higher seniority tier at work and my co-workers surprised me with not only one, but TWO "congratulations cakes!" It is just the most heartwarming feeling when people come together to celebrate.

I can't help but look back through all the long shifts, graveyard shifts, snowed out shifts and realize how much can happen in 7 years - yet how much I feel the same. The same Rachelle stoked to finally be a member and seek mentioship. Knowing that any next milestone is just waking up everyday, putting in the work, taking it one day at a time and before you know it, you'll be looking back from a place that seemed so distant. So pick your peaks, places, and mountains - they are in everyone's futures.

"Last week the Outdoor Recreation Council of British Columbia celebrated their 50th anniversary - bringing together over 300 representatives from dozens of outdoor recreation organizations".

I was selected to speak, here is my take-away:

Outdoor Recreation is not just a hobby we do, it is a lifestyle that many of us aim to achieve. A lifestyle where our bumper stickers tell a story of where we have been, our clothing reflects the adventures we hope to go on and our coffee thermos' demonstrate we are committed to the journey. The term outdoor recreation can mean a great number of things across industries.

To me, it means: memories, stepping away from my comfort zone, long heart to hearts with friends, helping strangers along the trail, sharing wisdom and trail mix all at the same time, and striping away elements of society until I am left with just my core values, an instinct to survive and a deep appreciation for the awakening of all my senses as I sit in a lawn chair listening to the birds, the water, the wind.

Last week, I attended the Outdoor Recreation Council Conference on behalf of the 4WDABC and I am incredibly inspired by the commitments of organizations across BC all working towards their causes, their accessibility, their recreation.

My take-away is, yes, outdoor recreation is political, it is political because it is governed by multiple departments, maintainence takes money and everyone wants a say. Certainly last week held its elements of political overtones which you can't escape when the future is labelled as "strategic planning".

My "strategic planning" is planning to never take forgranted what we have in British Columbia, to never allow "outdoor recreation" to become a game of back and forth, this or that, rather, to always remember that every battle fought within every recreation group in British Columbia, is coming from the same place of what stickers do I put on my nalgene bottles and car bumpers, how many layers do I bring this trip and will the rain and snow hold off. Our battle is the same, only our abbreviations look different.

Ever want to stand on a FIFA field? Its pretty easy, get yourself a job in film, hope they scout something cool, specifically a stadium, go out the field to measure if all your trucks fit - and magic - you'll be starring up at a gorgeous jumbotron!

Another powerful chapter in ARC Off-Road Training’s Ladies Only 4-Wheel Drive journey wrapped up with mud on our tires and smiles on every face. LOW GEAR 2025 brought together a trail-ready group of incredible women, eager to push limits, build skills, and support one another through every rut and ridge.
We are beyond grateful to all of this year’s participants - your spirit, determination, and camaraderie made this event unforgettable. Watching friendships form, courage rise, and confidence grow is exactly why LOW GEAR exists.
