There was little fanfare for this, because I initially thought our “street date” would be in November.
I hope you’ll check it out!

MAGIC DOUBLE G!

Working on sight reading wirh one of my students at USC. We were both astonished (and quite amused) when he took a breath and accidentally overshot the C4 by more than an octave-and-a half, playing a pristine, perfectly im tune, pianissimo G6 (above high C), a note he’d never come close to hitting.
…trying to draw some pedagogical insight from this somehow…but I got nuthin so far 😅
It remains a mystery!
And ideas, brass players?

📣 𝐂𝐋𝐀𝐒𝐄 𝐌𝐀𝐆𝐈𝐒𝐓𝐑𝐀𝐋

GEAR TEST # 2: YAMAHA 8335EA

Yo fellow trumpet (and improv) geeks...another test of the new YTR 8335EA trumpet (“European Atelier” oh my so fancy!).

Love this horn!!

Played a few test notes and then a quick chorus on “Stella by Starlight” changes. No high notes, not fast notes, even. Same dead room as last time.

This time it’s pretty much as the horn came out of the box, with the original valve buttons, the one suggested weighted valve cap on the third valve, and the optional extra post in place. I think I prefer the feel of the heavier valve buttons, but I’m not sure yet how they affect the sound.

ALSO: this time I used the Shure MV88 instead of the iPHone 16 internal mic. I like this mic, but there seems to be some kind of weird compression in the sound, maybe...? Not sure. It’s nice that you can tweak the EQ on this mic; it’s totally flat here.

As for the improv: I transcribed it in case anyone might be interested. If you’re alarmed by any of the chromaticism, I swear I can explain everything 😅 - and as for the “run on sentence” quality to the playing - yup. I often practice that way to see if I can spin out long lines, and sometimes perform that way if I’m playing unaccompanied, but I promise, I NEVER play that way with a rhythm section, or even another horn player (that’s a fun way to practice btw, two horns comping for each other, trading off blowing and doing bass lines).

What do you hear/think?
