Authoritarians despise diversity. Regardless of what they call their political party, the playbook is the same- frequently manufacture or exaggerate foreign threats, push for patriarchal control, or push domestic or international conspiracies to rally public support and deflect blame for domestic economic or social problems. Cultivating a singular dominant ethnic, cultural, or religious identity often marginalizes minority groups and normalizes state-sanctioned discrimination or violence. A reported 32 individuals died in ICE custody in 2025—the highest toll in over two decades. According to Cato Institute, roughly 73% of individuals held in ICE facilities had no criminal record, and only 5% were convicted of violent crimes.
