Ever find yourself putting things off, even when you know they’re important? It could be a task, idea, or even dealing with emotions. If so, you might be experiencing an “avoidant” defense mechanism. It’s a natural human response, but understanding it is the first step to growth! 🌱This visual breaks down the cycle of avoidant behavior and offers a path forward: * Notice what you are actively avoiding. Be honest with yourself about what you’re sidestepping. * What are the underlying fears? Dig a little deeper. Is it fear of rejection, failure, discomfort, or something else? * Encourage the part that wants to avoid. Acknowledge its protective intentions, don’t just push it away. * Take a tiny step. Small actions create big changes. * Learn and Grow. There are generally 4 types of defense mechanisms — those rooted in anger, anxiety, avoidance, and depression. Today’s set is focused on anger defense mechanisms. Some of us are really comfortable with expressing anger, and then there are those who suppress or direct it toward the self. Both can have immediate and long term consequences to our mental and physical health. A healthier path is to understand and transform the angry energy into determined action or passionate creativity. How do you deal with anger? .....#shadowwork #defensemechanisms #copingstrategies #angermanagement #breakthecycle #therapy #marriageandfamilytherapist #licensedsocialworker #innerchildlove by @rflct___

Mentalization at its core is the ability to understand oneself and others in terms of mental states—thoughts, feelings, intentions, and desires. It’s essentially “thinking about thinking.” This crucial capacity develops within the context of early attachment relationships. Here’s how childhood attachment trauma can disrupt it: * Insecure Attachment: * Children who experience inconsistent, neglectful, or abusive care may develop insecure attachment styles. This can impair their ability to accurately perceive and interpret their own and others’ mental states. * Trauma can lead to a sense of unpredictability in relationships, making it difficult to trust or understand others’ intentions. * Impaired Mentalizing: * Childhood trauma can interfere with the development of healthy mentalizing skills. Individuals may struggle to: * Distinguish between their own and others’ perspectives. * Regulate their emotions. * Form stable and healthy relationships. * Essentially, experiencing trauma can cause an individual to have a harder time to “see” the mental state behind behavior, in themselves, and others. * Consequences: * This impairment can lead to difficulties in relationships, emotional dysregulation, and increased vulnerability to mental health problems. In essence, secure attachment fosters the development of mentalization, while traumatic experiences can significantly hinder it.This worksheet is structured to support balanced mentalization by analyzing different aspects of the self and of an other simultaneously. ....#mentalhealthawareness #attachmenttheory #emotionalhealth #lcsw #lmft #mentalhealthadvocate #mentalhealthrecovery #borderlinepersonalitydisorder by @rflct___

Growing up with a parent who has a personality disorder can be like navigating a constantly shifting landscape. Stability is rare and emotional whiplash is common. One moment might be filled with intense affection, the next with unpredictable anger or withdrawal. Children often learn to walk on eggshells constantly trying to anticipate and manage their parent’s moods. This can lead to feelings of confusion, anxiety, and a sense of responsibility for their parent’s emotions. Boundaries are frequently blurred, and the child’s needs may be overshadowed by the parent’s. It’s a childhood marked by uncertainty where the normal expectations of parental consistency and emotional safety are often absent. Loving your parents and loving yourself are not mutually exclusive, even when relationships are complex. Choosing to love your parents, despite their flaws, can offer a sense of connection and understanding potentially fostering healing on both sides. However, prioritizing self-love is equally crucial. It means recognizing your own worth, setting healthy boundaries, and protecting your emotional well-being. Self-love allows you to navigate challenging family dynamics without sacrificing your own needs. It’s about acknowledging that you can love someone while also acknowledging their limitations and the impact those limitations have on you. This balance empowers you to build a life of resilience and self-respect regardless of the past.....#mentalhealthawareness #narcissisticpersonalitydisorder #narcissisticabusesurvivor #healingwithwords #mentalhealthpoetry #childhoodtrauma by @rflct___

Survival often necessitates a hardened exterior. The relentless pressure of providing for their families, navigating systemic barriers, and shouldering disproportionate burdens can forge a resilience that manifests as emotional distance. This “coldness,” born of necessity, isn’t a lack of love, but a protective mechanism. Unfortunately, children raised in this environment may internalize this emotional detachment, learning to prioritize pragmatism and self-reliance above vulnerability and emotional expression, potentially perpetuating a cycle of emotional restriction. Studies show that the effects of trauma can change DNA and be passed down three generations time. But all it takes is one person to choose vulnerability and heal so that their children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren don’t have to. ....#childhoodtrauma #healingwithwords #mentalhealthpoetry #mothersdaughter #daughterslove#cyclebreakers #lpcc #lmft #lcsw by @rflct___

Flow: The Sweet Spot of Focus and ChallengeFlow is a mental state of optimal performance where you’re completely absorbed in an activity. It’s that feeling of effortless focus, heightened awareness, and a sense of time slipping away. When you’re in a flow state, you’re so immersed in what you’re doing that you lose track of time and feel a sense of joy and fulfillment. To achieve flow, you need a balance between challenge and skill. The task should be challenging enough to keep you engaged but not so difficult that it becomes frustrating. When this balance is struck, you enter a state of effortless concentration, where you’re fully present and focused on the task at hand.Key characteristics of flow: * Total absorption: You’re completely focused on the activity. * Loss of self-consciousness: You’re not thinking about yourself or how you’re performing. * Distorted sense of time: Time seems to fly by. * Intrinsic motivation: You’re driven by the activity itself, not external rewards. * A sense of control: You feel in control of the situation.By understanding and cultivating flow, you can enhance your productivity, creativity, and overall well-being.What activity puts you in a state of flow? ....#mentalhealthawareness #flowstate #happinesscomesfromwithin #mentalhealthadvocate #mentalhealthreminder #liveyourbestlife #emotionalhealth by @rflct___
