This week in our Clinical Correlations lab, we practiced several important microbiology techniques.

We swabbed our cheeks, performed a Gram stain, and even got to view our own cells under the microscope!🔬We also practiced grossing shared specimens that we may
encounter in the clinical setting. During this process, we learned that a portion of tissue may need
to be submitted using aseptic techniques to the microbiology lab for culture and further analysis.

These hands-on activities helped connect the techniques we learned in class to their practical

Nicole Struthers, MS, PA (ASCP)CM, MLS (ASCP)CM, Assistant Professor in the Pathologists' Assistant Department, has received the Northern Illinois University (NIU) Alumni Association's 2026 Outstanding Young Alumna Award.

Her commitment to education, mentorship, and service, along with her continued support of NIU and its students, has earned her the award, which will be presented at the upcoming NIU Homecoming the week of October 5-11, 2026.

Stepping into the shoes of a histotech for the day!

In this week’s Intro to Histology lab, our Pathologists’ Assistant students practiced evaluating margins and inking for orientation on model tissue. In the lab this week, students put their descriptive skills to the test! They practiced formulating accurate gross descriptors for a variety of pathological specimens and worked alongside our DCE & Instructor, Micayla, to determine whether each sample demonstrated benign or malignant characteristics.
