When I first went to LA, I remember seeing fluorescent posters everywhere with just with just text on them and thinking that graphic design in LA was so boring. But I was wrong. And it’s good to be wrong.

LA is a car city, a city full of freeways and these posters with bright backgrounds and bold text on them were the clearest way to communicate information - garage sales, tax services, shows, etc. - anything you need to promote.

My friend @rrremio put me on to the Coby Poster Co. - a family-owned union poster shop which had inadvertently shaped the visual landscape of L.A. by ignoring the rules of typography using hand set wood block type and ancient beast sized manual ink press machines.

I loved everything about them so in maybe December of 2012 called them up to place an order for some posters. The guy on the phone took my information, asked me if it’s okay to put the Colby information on the bottom and then said that shipping to Canada was notoriously difficult and this would be part of the last run of Colby posters ever - as they were shutting down - so if I didn’t get my posters and I called back about the order, the phone would be disconnected. So it was up to me if I really wanted them. I said yes.

Currently I have some of them on display and for sale at the @friendsoffriendsvan Art Party at the Kent (535 Cambie) on Saturday, March 28th. Free viewing from 3 til 6 then part of a DJ party from 7:30 til 1am.

Please google #colbyposter if you want to learn more - there’s some decent articles about them out there.

Also @klyonsnatborn made some incredible Dancehalll name ones wants that I still want 😉 by @rhek

Please join us in celebrating the life of Calvin Yu on Thursday, Sept. 18th at Fortune Sound starting at 7pm.

I don’t really know what to say or do or how to process this. I can’t sum up anything with words. A whole life. All the experiences. A whole person. A literal lifetime. I can’t sum up everything with words. I hate this ending so much but all the hate in the world won’t change anything. I’m helpless. Nothing matters and everything ends. I’m numb. I’m mad. I’ve lost so many people, but you were always here. I wish you were still here. I’m so happy I got to spend time with you Calvin. You expanded and enriched my world. Everything matters and nothing ends. You changed who I am. You brought me joy. You’re a really good person Calvin. I’m thankful. I’m sad. I miss my friend.

In the early 2000s I heat pressed the letters MOBB DEEP in Cooper Black onto my Polo Sport shirt. Real Hip-Hop cause Infamous is the best rap duo of all time (tho if you say Outkast you’re also right).

I sorta wish I still had the custom Polo jawn but either way I’m stoked to have made an official Mobb Deep tour shirt in 2024. Plus the gig poster and I get to be the opening DJ. 16 year old me is geeked. Also, I like this back of the shirt cause, if you know, you can literally hear P’s voice in your head.

Shouts to @swingondeez for hooking this up and shouts to @properdesign for the rush job and the nice soft discharge print.
