I recently dropped off this painting, which will be a part of the NYCE Empowerment Collection at the new juvenile court center being built here in Nashville.

This collection of artworks was organized by @metroartsnash , to whom I am very grateful for this opportunity! It’s a great honor. It’ll be my first time having my work as a part of a permanent public display. And I love that it’s in my hometown, and will be in a space that is designed to help youths and their families during challenging times in their lives.

There will be an unveiling sometime next year when the building is complete, but in the meantime, Metro Arts gave me their blessing to share the work.

I look forward to sharing more when the time comes, but for now I hope you enjoy this short process video. :)

A small self portrait study, 8”diameter, done in preparation for a larger painting I am working on. I have been in the middle of several larger projects lately, so working on something more immediate like this was a nice change of pace.

Plus, looking at oneself in a mirror for several hours is always a good sanity check.

Results of said check still TBD!

Got to dust off my plein air painting gear this past weekend while visiting a friend’s farm. It reminded me that I gotta do this more often! Such an immersive rush. Thanks for the beautiful time, @mimirose101 🫶

Bonus pic of Gumper, chief of the farm cat hospitality committee, being great at her job.

A closeup of a painting of my dear wife, Marty, painted right around the time of our wedding, now 7 years ago. We have this in our studio, near my easel, so even when we’re not in there at the same time, she’s keeping an eye on me!

❤️

(Yes I’m getting back to work!)

Paint what you think about.

Living with our 5 year old daughter, I think about unicorns a lot. Thank you Aurelia <3

Morning Drink, oil on canvas, 18”x24” [sold]

This canvas started out as a figure painting that I abandoned a while back and then used as a place to scrape off leftover paint. Eventually some kind of image emerged (2nd image), and when the idea became clear enough, I performed some shape surgery on the compositional bones (3rd image).

I like that this kind of process feels like pulling order out of chaos, even though the chaos still comes through in the irregular and unpredictable surface that has built up over time. I find that it also encourages me to be less literal, and more emotional in my judgments. I wish I had more images of the earlier stages, but it’s hard to have that kind of forethought with these.

Thank you for looking :)

Sunflowers, oil on linen [sold]

A little out of season, but I finished this painting recently, from a painting I started last fall. I love large open flowers like these, they’re like colorful little satellite dishes, jostling each other gently to get their share of the light. 📡🌞

Our sweet daughter Eleanor. But don’t be fooled by those eyes! If you know Eleanor, then you know that looks means trouble 👼🌪️
