Went back to complete Day 6. Always enjoy making these silly selfies, inspired by Ivan Brunetti and Lynda Barry.

Now it’s really actually officially a wrap on 30 days of drawing with @wendymac and @drawtogether.studio
Onward!

Monsters in turtlenecks — because it’s been kind of a beastly winter in these parts. Jerry the Cyclops showed up on picture day wearing what’s technically a “mock turtleneck” but he’s still part of the team.

This is Marcellus. He’s a giant Pacific octopus and a significant character in Remarkably Bright Creatures, the fantastic debut novel by @shelbyvanpeltwrites from @eccobooks . Marcellus is a clever and curmudgeonly intermittent narrator in the book. Given his intellect and surplus of arms, I imagined him writing three drafts at a time simultaneously. He would submit them to the author, await notes, and then likely disregard any feedback because he knows best.

Marcellus writes using two vintage typewriters and one late 1980s Brother word processor which he salvaged and repaired himself. Maybe I’m getting in the (sea)weeds with these imaginary details, but that’s fan art, right? Anyway…it’s a charming story of love, loss, loneliness, grief and healing. Go read it.

So very haunted. 👉👉👉👉
Inspired by a @mikelowerystudio spooky season prompt - haunted house and mouse. by @rhino_doodle

I took a break from drawing this summer so that I could be a personal watermelon valet to our boys. So. Many. Melons.

This was the first summer I mostly turned off work while they were home with me during the days. I’ve been looking forward to school starting and a return to routines. As of today, they are both officially back in school. And I’m a wreck. You can find me weeping in the watermelon section at Costco. by @rhino_doodle

Happy Mother’s Day!
I drew this a few years ago after hearing this exchange between our youngest son and my wife. He was 6 at the time.

Lauren woke Franklin up this morning and said, “Thank you for making me a mommy.” Franklin replied, “Thank you for making me.” 🥹❤️

The drawing is an homage to a Quentin Blake illustration. by @rhino_doodle

Houseplants!!! Last week’s assignment with @mikelowerystudio had us pick a topic and illustrate a set of 12 icons using only two colors.

I made some leaps with this one. Mostly in how to bring sketchbook drawings into Procreate. I learned some efficiencies in how I build my layers and I found a new watercolor brush I love. Solid gains!

Arizona vacation highlights. Of note, Rocky from Project Hail Mary. The boys love to see a movie while traveling. Because to truly understand a place, you need to taste their movie theater popcorn.

We went to Arizona for spring break last week. Good fun in the desert sun. by @rhino_doodle

Opening page in a new sketchbook. Today is the beginning of the Getting Paid to Draw 8-week course with @mikelowerystudio . We had our kick-off Zoom yesterday. Great group of people! This is gonna be fun! by @rhino_doodle

Almost not quite a good egg but trying. This is a sticker design idea I created during @mikelowerystudio ‘s portfolio challenge last week. I’m going to be jumping in to his 8-week Getting Paid to Draw portfolio building class coming up real soon. Registration is open right now if you’re interested.

Also, I fudged the assignment. We’re supposed to draw pencils on paper first, then take it to Procreate. I started on paper with a sticker about a banana, but I bailed on that idea and did the egg start to finish in Procreate.

I’m recovering from gum graft surgery. The post-surgery side-effects include swelling (of the face), bruising (of the face), and low-grade whining (of the mouth). The swelling and bruising may last a week or two. The whining is expected to taper off as soon as I decide. Send love and strength to my wife. by @rhino_doodle
