🌟 Honoring my incredible mother with my annual repost. She was my first and greatest teacher, and though I miss her dearly, her lessons live on in me. I’ve embraced her wisdom and strive to make her proud by being a man who loves God, cares for his family, and contributes positively to the world.

Her teachings fuel my passion, especially in my work. I firmly believe that teachers deserve a top spot at the table alongside test makers, policy practitioners, and curriculum creators. We’re on the front lines, understanding what it takes for our children to thrive.

Unity is our strength. I’m a firm advocate for equity and diversity in schools, as it enriches both education and the teaching community. Together, we can erase the school-to-prison pipeline and forge a new path: a school-to-teacher pipeline. Let’s recruit, nurture, and sustain more educators, while opening doors to schools instead of prison cells. It’s time to uplift the world around us.

In 2011, I was at one of my lowest points, jobless and feeling like a failure, crashing on my mom’s couch. But then, out of the blue, an opportunity to substitute teach came knocking, and I decided to give it a shot. Little did I know, saying “yes” would lead me to a path of passion and purpose. Teaching the youth became my calling, igniting a fire within me that I couldn’t ignore. I returned to school, became a certified teacher, and even earned my doctorate in education. Fast forward to 2019, I was humbled to be named County Teacher of the Year and Maryland State Teacher of the Year. 🏆 This journey taught me that chasing purpose is the key – when we follow our true calling, impact and success naturally follow. Excited to share that this summer, we welcomed the largest cohort of Black male students ever to participate in the High School Teacher University- a dual enrollment program exposing students to the teaching profession at UMES.

My heart is full of gratitude. Thank you to every student who said yes, every school district, counselor, teacher, principal, parent, community partner, mentor, and supporter who believed in this vision. Whether your contribution was seen or behind the scenes, you helped make this possible.

This is about creating opportunities, changing lives, and building the next generation of educators.

The work continues, but today we celebrate what we accomplished together.

As I reflect on my time as a @ucbcreeo Visiting Scholar at @ucberkeleyofficial , I’m filled with gratitude.

When I first arrived, I carried a mixture of anticipation, excitement, and, if I’m honest, a little anxiety. I wondered how I would find my place at the nation’s #1 public research institution. But it didn’t take long to realize something important: while it was an incredible honor to be at Berkeley, my presence there mattered too. I belonged in that space, and I had something meaningful to contribute.

I am incredibly grateful to the Center for Research on Expanding Educational Opportunity and to Dr. @travis.bristol for creating an experience that extended far beyond research. Thank you for welcoming me into a community of scholars, inviting me into meetings and center events, challenging my thinking, creating space to write and reflect, and generously sharing your wisdom about research, leadership, and navigating the tenure process.

More than anything, you reminded me that our work is ultimately about serving others, but that effective service also requires caring for ourselves. That lesson will stay with me.

This experience also reinforced that the work of educational equity is bigger than any one institution. Whether at my HBCU or at Berkeley, I found educators and researchers wrestling with many of the same questions, challenges, and possibilities. Different contexts, shared commitments. That realization was both humbling and motivating.

I leave Berkeley with new ideas, stronger research partnerships, a broader perspective on how research, policy, and practice intersect, and a renewed sense of purpose. I’m especially grateful to have mentors and colleagues who are invested not only in helping me become a stronger researcher, but also a thoughtful collaborator and leader.

This picture changed my life.

At the time, I had no plans of becoming a teacher, now check out the website https://mocedumes.com 🤯

Seriously, I was fresh out of college with no job lined up, I was asked one simple question: “Would you mentor a group of young men?” I said yes.

This photo was taken on the bus ride to one of our very first adventures together, an obstacle course that challenged these young men to trust one another, face their fears, and discover what they were capable of. Looking back, I realize it wasn’t just their lives that were changing. Mine was too.

As I mentored them, I saw pieces of my own story in theirs. That experience led me into substitute teaching, then into the classroom, where I realized I wanted to become the educator I needed when I was growing up.

That one “yes” became a journey I never could have imagined.

Since then, I’ve had the honor of being named Maryland Teacher of the Year, becoming a professor, and helping build pathways for more young men, especially Black men, to see themselves as educators, mentors, and leaders.

What started in 2011 has grown into something much bigger than me.

Sometimes the rooms you dream about become the rooms you get to work in.

I’m incredibly grateful to be serving as a Visiting Scholar at UC Berkeley’s Center for Research on Expanding Educational Opportunity (@ucbcreeo ). Collaborating with Dr. @travis.bristol , whose scholarship has deeply influenced my own, is both humbling and inspiring.

This opportunity is more than a career milestone. It’s a reminder that the work matters. Every conversation, every classroom, and every study brings us closer to building a stronger, more diverse educator workforce.

I’m excited to continue asking the hard questions about educator identity, persistence, and educational justice, and even more excited to bring what I learn back to the communities and students I serve.

On Juneteenth, I’m reminded that education can be a space of liberation.

For many young people, especially those who have been overlooked or underestimated, seeing someone who looks like them in positions of leadership, mentorship, and education can change everything.

That’s why @made_umes , the Man the Shore Summit, and my Men of Color in Education program matter.

This year, we brought together young men from across the Eastern Shore and beyond to connect with educators, mentors, and leaders who poured into them, challenged them, and inspired them. One young man shared, “I want to be the role model for the next kid that I didn’t have growing up.”

That’s what this work is about.

Not just preparing future educators, but helping young people see their potential, believe in themselves, and understand that there’s no limit to what they can achieve.

Still trying to find the words for this one as I travel to @ucberkeleyofficial !

I’m incredibly honored to be selected as a Visiting Scholar at UC Berkeley’s Center for Research on Expanding Educational Opportunity (@ucbcreeo ). To learn alongside outstanding scholars and work with Dr. @travis.bristol , a trailblazer for Black educators and Black men in education, is truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

As I prepare for this journey, I can’t help but think about the little Black boy from Salem, New Jersey. If I could tell him one thing, it would be: “I’m proud of you.”

This opportunity isn’t just about me. It’s about continuing the work of creating pathways for more young Black boys to see the power of education and to see themselves not only as students, but as future teachers, professors, and leaders.

Salem, NJ ➝ Berkeley, CA.
