Rhythm Itch is back from 19th October with collegiate shag! This social dance is usually done to slightly faster swing jazz, so it's great if you love a quicker beat.

Classes are suitable for complete beginners and a great way to meet new people. We focus on connection to the music, and learning to truly social dance as that's where we find the most joy.

Collegiate Shag is one of many vernacular jazz social dances, that originated in America. While the history is muddy it likely has a similar origin to other dances like lindy hop, balboa and charleston. These dances originated from black American communities dancing to the music of the time, and carry West African roots, rhythms and cultural expression.

We’re feeling incredibly grateful to everyone who came along to our Call & Response workshop, and to Gabs for sharing so generously with us.

There was so much curiosity in the room, lots of laughter, some really thought-provoking ideas, and a real sense of people exploring and learning together.

It was especially lovely to see people travelling in from different places and dancers from across the wider community coming together to share the space. Those moments of connection are something we really value.

Thanks to everyone who joined for fundamentals. We shared some core movements like tuck turn, pass by, and bring in. It was also really fun to watch a clip from the Spirit Moves with some of our new dancers.

CALL & RESPONSE: A special guest workshop with Gabriela Novellino. Ticket link in Bio.

We’re very excited to welcome Gabriela Novellino to Birmingham for a special evening exploring Call & Response in jazz dance.

Across two open-level classes, we’ll explore rhythm, musicality, listening and interaction through both solo movement and partner dancing.

💛 Class 1 – Solo Jazz
💛 Class 2 – Partner Dancing

The classes are designed to complement one another beautifully, but can also be taken individually.

From our first conversations with Gabs, it felt like her approach to jazz dance, connection and community aligned so naturally with what we care about and want to keep building at Rhythm Itch, so we honestly can’t wait to share this evening with you.
