some spaces don’t seek our attention. they quietly hold it.

at the MAP in Marrakech, i am reminded of everything that moves me in architecture. the raw beauty of earth and cedar, the strength of the walls, and that understanding that shadows deserve as much attention as light.

inspired by the historic Ben Youssef Madrasa, the building rises around a central octagonal courtyard. thousands of terracotta bricks and dark timber galleries give the building an almost primitive beauty.

here, in the depth of the shadows, the light feels almost sacred. perhaps what moves me most is how little it takes to feel so much.

a quiet reminder that restraint can be the most powerful design gesture.

evening falls, and soon a thousand and one candles are lit, one by one, as if by enchantment.
in every corner, beneath the high colonnades, in the stillness of the garden, in the lanterns on the terrace where dinner is served, in the bedroom where the dreamer of flames rests on the bed, her gaze held in the golden spell.

ten o’clock, the morning has taken its time. so has she.

she came here on a pilgrimage of her own, to remember the gentleness of things. waking to the song of birds, taking her time, walking barefoot, losing herself in the arabesques of light the sun draws across the rug in her room.

a quiet return to her body, to its own wisdom. there, in the garden among fragrant roses, it is exquisite serenity.

she smiles, soon very little feels essential.

she wakes late with the sun in her eyes. no alarm, no rush. just a lazy saturday morning. she smiles as the ginger cat wanders past, hoping for a little of her breakfast. on the terrace, the maalems have finished the earthen walls, dust and clay, the colour of the desert glowing under the brillant sun.

oh Marrakech, what a wonder you are! this is how one falls in love with you.

dressed in silence, the room in its quiet order leaves life to its beautiful disorder.

weary from walking, she dreams of a long stay. she feels so far away here. resting in the quiet of the salon, she lets time slip away, savouring the silent morning so much she wishes she would never leave. the maâlems have not yet begun their slow work of the earth.

she sits at her desk and begins to write:

“Sunday 6 september. All I feel is your absence. All I long for is a piece of you. I resist the ache, your name on my lips. I leave the words unspoken. In my dreams, you are all mine, when I wake, you are still a dream…”

la nuit est belle. elle n’a pas sommeil. dans le soir qui monte, au sommet de l’arche, elle voit l’olivier qui partage le ciel avec le haut mur blanc. là, cachés sous les feuilles, se hâtent les fruits dans les pas de la terre. dans l’ombre, s’attarde une lumière. elle, n’a d’impatience que pour un autre jour qu’elle attend.

i often walk barefoot
it slows my pace
makes me feel connected

i collect stones on walks
shells by the sea
small pieces of the earth
held in my hands

when life feels heavy
i always return to the earth

somewhere at the edge of the world

the sand beneath my feet
the air on my skin
the salty breeze in my hair
sitting on the dune by the sea

i return to nature to find peace
to reconnect with what is essential
and somehow, this finds its way into the spaces i create

at riad berbère, everything begins with the earth

soil, sand, plaster, wood and stone
colours borrowed from the landscape
the raw earthen tadelakt
the milky white of plaster walls
the cracks on the floor
the scent of cedar and orange blossom
the texture of raw linen
the chatter of birds in the quiet

an invitation to simply feel and ground yourself
