Is the Global Leadership Centre – in what was Oxford’s Osney Power Station – @johnmcaslanpartners’ best reuse building in the UK? “There is certainly no more satisfying restatement and adaptation of an original building’s geometries in its oeuvre,” says @tim.abrahams, “and none that exhibit such a mastery of the material palette and structural dynamics of adapting a 19th-century brick building.”

The project provides @oxfordsbs with a characterful setting for short executive education courses. Teaching space occupies the power station's 19th-century brick base, while 120 bedrooms fill the 20th-century turbine halls that rise above, and similar additions that respect the building’s familiar silhouette. A new building type designed to live with the dimensions and memory of the old.

✈️ On an airfield near Bristol, @fcbstudios rising Brabazon scheme has important lessons for the government’s new towns programme.

The early phases of the huge development show the impact of layout, brickwork details and space – and why infrastructure is key – finds Eleanor Young.

“It could have been a different story. This edge of Bristol is typified by sprawling suburban housing, from which people have to jump in their cars to get somewhere. The site had consent for 2,000 homes, until the case was made for it as a new piece of city under a fresh masterplan by FCBS...'

🌀 A recurring curve motif and textured facade enliven an extension by Ashworth Parkes Architects in Cambridge.

Painted brickwork is used like a textile, with shifts in bond, depth and orientation creating texture and shadow, alongside concrete lintels and cedar shingles. Curves appear in the joinery, cladding and windows to playfully link spaces.

The clients, a contractor and interior designer, worked on the project – allowing for an unusually close collaboration between stakeholders.

“It’s valuable allowing construction knowledge into the design process early. Our collaboration demonstrated how much can be achieved when architect and builder are discussing not simply how to construct a detail, but why it matters” reflects Ashworth Parkes director @jeremy_ashworth

New homes for Custom House. Two blocks designed by @adamkhanarch are the first fruits of a regeneration masterplan developed by the practice for the London Borough of Newham, in a co-design process with local residents.

The design team began by creating a venue for community discussions, taking over a disused post office on the high street for workshops and upskilling sessions.

Principles established by the plan are present in the affordable-rent blocks: set-backs to mitigate overshading, landscaped areas that add to the public realm, and subtle details that give each block its own identity.

With housing design in London driven “algorithmically” by procurement routes, space standards and so on, says Adam Khan, it’s inevitable so much looks the same. The task is to “work within that to find a sense of decency, dignity and the beautiful quirks that are really hard to get”.

♻️ Rock Architects’ stepped brick corbels mark the entrance to a remarkable Passivhaus retrofit in Cambridge.

On a local project, the studio dismantled an ageing 1950s house, reconstituting it as East Anglia’s first single home to achieve EnerPHit certification.

It is now a warm haven for a family of three and their pets, with a calm palette of Cambridge Buff brick, Douglas fir and terrazzo.

“A stepped motif runs through a variety of moments, from finger grip details and transitions across levels to details on furniture items, and the corbels themselves carry on into the living room. So the architecture is felt inside the house as much as it is from the street” say co-directors Adam Leigh-Brown and @barry_wark

The calm composure of One Liverpool Street belies chaotic conditions beneath. @ericparryarchitects has realised the 11-storey office building above a tangle of tunnels for Crossrail, the London tube, the post office and City of London utilities, plus sewers, an electrical substation and an enormous service shaft. Just 25% of the site footprint was available to build on.

Eric Parry talks about it as a “bridge in two senses of the word” – not just over the tracks, but also between varied local conditions: stone neoclassical neighbours on one side, and modern metal office buildings on the other.

The twin characters are reconciled in subtly classical facades formed of cast aluminium – lending a stranger, more ambiguous character than first appears.

Twisting as it rises, the ceramic-clad Wasl Tower in Dubai is designed in response to a challenging climate, and the city.

“Many towers in Dubai are affected by wind loads,” explains @ben_van_berkel, founder and principal of @we.are.uns. “While Wasl Tower could be seen as mitigating these loads on a macro scale by dampening the wind currents around the building, our primary goal was more at a micro level, seeking to harvest the wind’s cooling power by allowing it to flow around the ceramic fins and through the perforated metal grilles on their flanks, helping to expel the heat gain in the terracotta back into the atmosphere instead of through the curtain wall”.

Building performance was not the only driver for the tower’s form. UNS also pursued the idea of contrapposto – a tradition in Classical sculpture which challenges the rigidity of forms with a front, a back and two sides – so that the tower’s appearance shifts to address the urban environment in all directions.

At the Évian resort in France, radical architect Patrick Bouchain has completed the swansong to his career in the place where it began. In 1993 Bouchain built the low-cost, rustic La Grange au Lac concert hall. Now it is joined by La Source Vive, an organic, copper-clad hall for chamber music designed in collaboration with @pcastream.

“It provides a richness – and much-needed public and backstage facilities – which elevates the artistic potential of the complex to world-class status, alongside Glyndebourne and Tanglewood,” says RIBAJ reviewer Andrew Todd.
