...started up another trip around the sun recently, so I thought I would take a bit of a drive. 1500+ miles is a heck of a distance to drive from Sacramento to Vallejo for band practice, but I did it hahah. Visited one of my oldest friends and his awesome crew of folks up in Springfield, OR and then meandered down to Fresno to visit some more old friends.....

Highlights include: a sundial bridge, Mt. Shasta, the headwater springs for the freaking Sacramento River!, meeting my newest nephew/godson, almost pooping my pants by a river, a random Oregon reservoir, el toro leon, poetry readings, a rad rad rad drive thru the central valley (seemingly endless farmland then instantly wetlands!, more farmland, cool little "towns," neat mountain views, cool valley views), and band practice to cap it all off 🤘

Rant over. Thank you for reading this far. by @ribeyejohnson

Making this post took me longer than I planned... Each time I sat down to write it my mind would go blank and a bit of a numbness would overtake me. I thought that was strange and silly; I didn't personally know Bob Weir, and I never had the opportunity to meet him....but his impact on my life has been very profound (a fact I didn't really realize fully until this past weekend and the last few days).
I was alive when Jerry died in '95, and I do remember it very well. I would not have considered myself a deadhead then, but I knew of the Grateful Dead and I understood the impact of his death. For me, as I grew up and got more into the Dead, Bobby became what Jerry had been for so many.
He has been the voice guiding my journeys thru all their shows I've attended (the dead, grateful dead fare thee well shows, further, and dead and company); I've seen Bobby play more than any other musician. I've probably heard Bobby play more than any other musician (if I'm not mistaken, he is the most recorded musician, or one of the most recorded musicians in history). He has been my wise, mystic, musical wizard for many years and his checking out hit me like a ton of cosmic bricks.
His guitar playing is singular in this world; a lead/rhythm technique he developed after listening to McCoy Tyner and the John Coltrane Quartet. Big hands make for cool and interesting chord inversions, which in turn helped to fuel Jerry's guitar solos, which then aided Phil's bass lines and vice versa.
In his younger days, Bobby's voice was full of energy, and in his old age his voice was full of gruff wisdom, both impossible to ignore....Bringing the listener deep into whatever story Bob was telling. Even at its weakest, his voice seemed to pull the listener into the tale he was weaving.
He was an amazing musician, story teller, philosopher, and so much more. Try not to be too sad tho, he viewed death as a liberation, a transition to a different adventure. He's probably out there in the cosmos having the jam of his life with his brothers and many others, and we know they're having more fun than a frog in a glass of milk. Here's to Bobby, thanks for the music. Thanks for the stories. #NFA by @ribeyejohnson

My first concert was The Moody Blues...I would guess I've been listening to them since before I was born; what can I say, my parents have great music taste. John Lodge was one of my first bass playing influences, his sound seeping into my brain long before I even knew I wanted to play music. At the Moody Blues concerts I went to, I remember specifically watching him play. He was so locked into their music and it was obvious he was having a great time doing it. He made the music look fun. Go listen to The Moody Blues today, tomorrow, or any chance you get... If you never have, you won't be disappointed, and if you have before then you'll be reminded why you love them. Go listen, for John. by @ribeyejohnson
