The other day I got the invite to go check out @theocroker at @bluenotenyc. Had never caught him live, and wow. A phenomenal, eclectic, diverse and crazy talented musician. Theo then invited this wonderful singer @amyraleon to guest on a couple of songs. I put up a short clip recently. I caught most of her first song, found at the end. Then back to doing what I do, shoot.

Standing here with the amazing Chris Barnum of Localis in Sacramento, California.

Chris and I met through Terremoto Coffee about three years ago on one of his visits to NYC. I didn’t know anything about Chris. The way I like it.

Just a customer who heard about the shop and wanted to try it. Had our pleasantries, and off he went.

A year later, he came by again. On both occasions, it wasn’t planned, and I happened to be in the shop—which is rare early in the morning. Call it kismet or what have you.

The second time, he mentioned he was a chef with a spot in Sacramento.

I thought, “Cool,” and replied, “What’s it called?”

He said, “Localis.”

Again, not thinking much of it.

I take people for who they are, nothing to do with pomp and circumstance. My view is: “Are you cool to speak with and have a laugh with?”

That’s pretty much it.

Story continued as you slide across through the picture carousel.

Then the next year, on his third visit, Chris brought his whole team on a field trip to try coffee spots for his new place opening.

We got to speaking, and he looked at Jerome, one of his staff members, and said:

“10 interesting?”

Jerome nodded yes.

He proceeded to interview me for what seemed like an eternity while Jerome placed a mic and pocket cams everywhere.

It was great.

We spoke mainly about music, as that was our background before hospitality and an absolute passion for both of us.

Little did I know what he was up to.

At the end, he mentioned he was working on his next menu, and it would feature ten of the most interesting people he’d met in his travels.

And could he feature me?

Incredibly honored. And I said sure.

As some of my friends have mentioned, Chris must not meet a lot of people.

It’s quite an honor, but I think I’m an insufferable bore, to be honest. I like what I like, and they are my things. I guess they are of interest to some people. I think my work is interesting.

Have I done some really cool shit? Sure, but that’s work.

But I guess my work, in particular, becomes me.

And again, I didn’t know much about Chris or Localis.

Then later, I learned Chris had received a Michelin Star for each of the previous four years. Now rece taken in Localis by @ricagudelo

The unrelenting force of nature that is @Celeste from the UK. An Artist that can seem to do it all and this run of shows proved that. From the heart wrenching ballads she is known for, to gritty down and dirty funk soul, then holding the room by a thread singing acapella. You could hear a pin drop.

One of the toughest shows I’ve shot in a very long time. The humidity levels in NYC this week have been unrelenting. A room stuffed with impassioned bodies, fogged up eye cups and lenses, very rough club lighting even with cameras that can shoot at 25k iso (which I hate doing). But as I always say, your only job as a photographer shooting people is to make them look cool. I think I accomplished it on these. Thanks to @dr_bridgewater for bringing me along to this one. Always a laugh when Davis is at the keys.

What an immense pleasure to catch @theafghanwhigs LIVE from @websterhall. I’ve been able to catch just about all of the bands #GregDulli has created. Plus solo shows. First time catching The Afghan Whigs. Too short of a show. If they come through your town, pop in. Monstrous playing! And the NYC show is always the best because they bring through guests members that live in the area.

Last week was the Gilad Hekselman run at the Village Vanguard with Brad Mehldau, Marcus Gilmore and Thomas Morgan playing a sold out run and absolutely killing it. I was able to catch two nights and it’s tough to say one was better than the other. They just burned through the set. With @ghex adding @bradmehldauofficial to this quartet took it to another level. Whatever incarnation Mehldau is in the band, it’s always elevated. Add the monstrous feel and originality of @drummerslams then the quiet thunderous bottom of #ThomasMorgan and it’s impossible to not be an amazing night of music at the @vanguardjazz

A couple of weeks ago I had the immense pleasure of finally catching @grace__bowers live. What an absolute monster of a player with a phenomenal stage presence. She came up in the guitar god blues. Really look forward to seeing as her style adapts, develops and morphs into where she finds herself. Go have a listen and check out her various live performances online and try to catch her live!

Saddens to learn of the passing of @tonyvaccarophotographer a few years back. I got to see Tony at photo shows and gallery shows about twice a year. Or on an occasional visit to his gallery in LIC. Tony loved talking about photography and so happy to see that his work became more and more sought after and respected by collectors and galleries. Here, I finally asked for a photo (not something I ever do) sitting with his trusty camera.

From WWII and beyond, what this man experienced, captured and lived is one for the record books. As they are called, the greatest generation. Landing on D-Day at Utah Beach to going on to shoot Picasso, Sinatra, Monroe, Sophia Loren, Hepburn, Cocteau and the list goes on. Not an easy road, all while raising a family. A hustle and a half! Man, what a life!

Discovered @aroojaftab a little over a year ago and have been fascinated with the music ever since. Music, the great common denominator that brings us all together regardless of anything. LIVE at @bluenotenyc with an amazing band. One more night left to catch the show. I highly recommend it. And if she’s coming through your town, pop in for a night of wonderful music and laughs with her stage banter.

With all the hype around the release of the new @leicacamerausa #monochrome #Q3Mono, I decided to do some drag shutter with the @leicastoremiami #Q2Monochrome under expose it, push it and add some grain. It’s is argued that’s it’s a very specialized camera with one purpose. But I believe something that should be used often and a lot. There is not anything on the market that compares in B&W shooting to a native monochrome file, and no one does it better than @leica_camera.

Where to even begin this picture. I’ve somehow been in these rooms my whole life. Since I was a 12-13. But never have I stood shoulder to shoulder discussing our hero’s with someone of his stature and importance to the world as @tommorello . Tom was so beyond gracious and like a gleeful kid discussing Sabbath, Ozzy, Lollapalooza, Chick Berry, and so many of the musical hero’s we both shared. Tonight at @irvingplaza he brought his #TomMorelloAndFriends tour. And man were there some friends. You can see them in the stories shortly. Can’t thank @marcurselli enough for the invite, always being the last minute concert buddy and connecting with @eugene_hutz all discussing music. Laughs all around from the Ozzy stories from Tom. Then as Tom is introducing people, you meet the grand daughter of #WoodyGuthrie, how’d I get in this room. Laughing with #LivingColour and #RunDMC. 🫣🤦🏻‍♂️

As Marc said, this could only happen in New York. And we both looked at each other with Eugene and reaffirmed, we’re in the greatest city in the world.

If you don’t know Tom’s various bands and projects. You need to do a deep dive into #RageAgainstTheMachine, #AudioSlave and being the light and ambassador to rock and metal wherever he goes. Watch the Ozzy doc and you’ll see what he pulled off with Sharon. Can’t wait for the concert film!

It has been a wonderful weekend of music discovering @zeibarra and his wonderful guests @doramorelenbaum and @julia_mestre. The weekend started with an invite only show to the @glasshaus in #Brooklyn from @marcurselli and culminated with the show at @nublunyc in #AlphabetCity

The #ZeIbarra show at #GlassHaus was recorded for a future release produced by #MarcUrselli featuring #DoraMorelenbaum & #JuliaMestre. Very much look forward to the full album. And if Zé is coming through your town. I would go!
