In 1985, Rice scientists inside a lab in the Space Science and Technology Building made a discovery that changed the landscape of nanotechnology — a stable hollow carbon structure named C60. Their research culminated in a Nobel Prize in chemistry in 1996 and opened a research ecosystem. Read "The Birth of the Buckyball" at the link in bio.
